United Kingdom parliament will vote on Brexit legislation week of June 3 -Barclay

Attempts to find a cross-party compromise began after Mrs May's Brexit deal, the withdrawal agreement that was negotiated with the European Union, was rejected three times by MPs.

Prime Minister Theresa May's government will publish draft legislation in the first week of June that would allow Brexit to proceed if approved by parliament, a Downing Street spokesman announced on Tuesday.

May met with Corbyn "to make clear our determination to bring the talks to a conclusion and deliver on the referendum result to leave the EU".

The prime minister's Brexit deal will be "dead" if the withdrawal bill does not pass in the Commons in June, Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay has said.

While European Union elections have always been seen as a safe place for mid-term protest votes to take place by the political establishment in the United Kingdom, polling showing that the month-old Brexit Party is now beating the Conservatives in even general election polling has sent shockwaves through Westminster.

"And of course it would absolutely split the Conservative Party".

The withdrawal agreement bill - or WAB as it is known in Westminster - was meant to be the second stage after MPs had voted to ratify the agreement, to enshrine it in United Kingdom law.

A handout photograph taken and released by the UK Parliament on 3 April 2019 shows Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May speaking during the weekly Prime Minister's Questions (PMQs) question and answer session in the House of Commons in London.

On Tuesday evening, following the latest instalment of cross-party talks with the Labour Party, Ms.

The spokesman said that unless there was an agreement based on "real compromise and movement by the Government" then the WAB would be "based on the same botched Brexit deal that has been rejected three times already by Parliament".

She turned to Labour last month in the hope of finding a way through, but the party is insisting on a close trading relationship with the European Union that many Conservative MPs reject.

With Mrs May's future linked to the passage of a Brexit deal, getting legislation through the Commons and Lords by the summer break could also pave the way for her departure from Number 10.

Ministers spent more than two hours discussing the Brexit situation and despite the apparent lack of progress in talks with Labour decided the process should continue, but with a clear view that "we need to get a move on". It is also the Peterborough byelection, which Labour, the Tories and the Brexit party are tightly contesting, on 6 June.

Corbyn "set out the shadow cabinet's concerns about the prime minister's ability to deliver on any compromise agreement", a spokesperson said.

A sticking point has been the Irish backstop, an insurance policy aimed at avoiding post-Brexit controls on the border between Northern Ireland and EU-member Ireland.

Its deputy leader, Nigel Dodds, said: "Unless she can demonstrate something new that addresses the problem of the backstop then it is highly likely her deal will go down to defeat once again".

Downing Street said efforts were continuing to find a "sustainable" majority for Mrs May's deal, with discussions involving DUP and Labour MPs as well as Tories.
