Why Uber Drivers Will Strike Around The World On Thursday

Chicago-area participants will join ride-share drivers in several states and dozens of cities around the country and world asking Uber and Lyft for higher wages.

"The offering, which could value Uber at around $100 billion, is expected to reverberate through global financial markets and to solidify the company's position as one of the most consequential technology firms of the past decade".

The TWU argues the effective earnings of Uber and UberEats drivers often come under minimum wage. In a January 2017 company video, Uber drivers are seen entering a luxury hotel in Chandigarh city, where guards open their taxi doors and welcome them.

"Whether its more consistent earnings, stronger insurance protections or fully-funded four-year degrees for drivers or their families, well continue working to improve the experience for and with drivers", the person said. Ahead of the actions, Lyft said its hourly wages have risen over the last two years and average over $20 per hour.

The inquiry will table a report on the matter later this year. As the company pitched itself to investors, protesters attempted to picket the company's roadshow, and drivers went on strike in San Diego and Los Angeles.

But there appears to be no easy way to satisfy both drivers' calls for higher wages, and investors' demands that Uber eventually make money.

In New York, as many as 10,000 drivers are joining a two-hour morning commute work stoppage, organizers with the New York Taxi Workers Alliance said.

Terms of the partnership weren't publicly disclosed, although as a newly public company Lyft may reveal more information about the deal in its SEC disclosures.

Correction: An earlier version incorrectly stated the Uber IPO would raise $90 billion in new capital for the company. It is expected to be the biggest internationally coordinated effort against the ride-hailing companies to date.

Matthew Wald of Drive Forward, a drivers association co-founded and sanctioned by Uber, said the Seattle demonstrators, "do not represent the views of the thousands of drivers providing rides every week in the Seattle area", in a statement. Drivers often work part time and, sometimes, for a variety of ride-hailing and delivery services. An incomplete list of strikes and protests is being built here.

Some drivers went offline in NY between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m., though it was still easy to locate a driver during rush hour near Wall Street in lower Manhattan.

No company better sums up the perils of the casual gig economy than Uber. That means hundreds of Uber employees will likely become overnight millionaires and the disparity of wealth between company employees and drivers will get even wider.

Arun Sundararajan, a professor at New York University's Stern School of Business, told CNN Business that the strikes will be an interesting test of the strength of driver groups.

"I'm not surprised, but frankly it's absolutely disgusting Uber and Lyft would incentivize both riders and drivers to break the strike today", said Rebecca Stack-Martinez, an Uber driver helping to organize the protest in front of Uber's headquarters in San Francisco on Wednesday. Lyft introduced free bank accounts and discounts on vehicle rentals and maintenance for drivers; Uber's new Uber Pro program offers drivers free online education at ASU and cash-back options on gas. In other cities, like Philadelphia, driver groups will hold protests and press conferences about working conditions under the rideshare companies.
