Israel Signals Cease-Fire With Gaza After Hundreds of Rockets

The Israeli military lifted protective restrictions on residents in southern Israel on Monday, while Gaza's ruling Hamas militant group reported a cease-fire deal had been reached to end the deadliest fighting between the two sides since a 2014 war.

A ceasefire, mediated by officials from Egypt and Qatar, has since been reached.

However, there appeared to be no rocket fire coming from Gaza following the Palestinians' announcement.

Israel and Hamas are bitter enemies who have fought three wars since the Islamic group seized control of Gaza from the internationally recognized Palestinian Authority in 2007.

The Gaza health ministry said the dead from the Israeli strikes included a 14-month-old baby and a pregnant woman, 37.

Four Israeli civilians have been killed since the rocket attacks began on May 4. Palestinian militant factions said they were retaliating in an "unprecedented manner" after residential buildings were hit, and threatened to expand the range of their rockets if the "aggression" continued.

United States President Donald Trump meanwhile assured Israel on Sunday that it had Washington's full support against "these terrorist acts". "We are preparing to continue", he said about actions in the coast enclave, from which more than 600 rockets were fired.

The first Palestinian-American woman to serve in Congress, Tlaib's associations with pro-Hamas and pro-Hezbollah activists have been condemned before.

The upsurge in violence came at a particularly sensitive time for both sides. Many think Memorial Day, Independence Day and the upcoming global song contest in Tel Aviv, Eurovision, put the brakes on Israel's response. Israel says four of its civilians were killed.

It was a turbulent weekend in Israel but after two days of violence, Hamas said it agreed to a ceasefire.

By the time the sun rose Monday, Palestinian militants had fired about 690 rockets into Israel, according to the IDF, and Israel had conducted airstrikes on 350 targets. Among the steps, he said, were the relaxing of limits on fishing and improvements in Gaza's electricity and fuel situation.

If you consider it morally abhorrent for a white supremacist terrorist to target Jews for death, you should consider Hamas and Islamic Jihad the same way.

"The Palestinian rocket attacks are a natural response to the continuous Israel violations and crimes committed against the Palestinians", Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum told Middle East Eye on Sunday.

Israeli officials have yet to confirm if they have accepted the cease fire.

Following the army's statement, the Education Ministry announced schools would be open as usual in the cities and communities where not long ago sirens blared ceaselessly.

Rockets rained down on important urban centres, such as the southern cities of Ashkelon, Ashdod and Beersheva.
