More Than 103,000 Migrants Reached Southern Border In March

A US federal judge on Monday blocked President Donald Trump's policy of returning asylum seekers to Mexico to wait out the processing of their cases, saying the Department of Homeland Security had overstepped its authority.

This would give migrant parents awaiting immigration hearings a choice: agree for their child to be held separately, or be detained together, possibly indefinitely, until their court date.

Officials highlighted the number during a conference call on Tuesday to announce the latest data on unauthorized migrants crossing the southern border.

That was a almost 50 percent increase over February's 10,500 apprehensions in those sectors.

According to a senior administration official, the White House is weighing steps that would force changes to the current asylum system, which President Donald Trump and Republicans say are fundamentally flawed. The Trump administration has been making efforts to stop illegal migration into the United States, even threatening to close the southern border.

"Once you don't have it, that's why you see many more people coming", he said. The preliminary injunction granted by U.S. District Judge Richard Seebord halts a series of new policies implemented in January by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in the hopes of stopping Central American families from entering the U.S.as asylum-seekers.

He then said border people are "fantastic" before insisting he was going to have to call up more military. And this year's number is still a small fraction of apprehensions - 3,100 cases represents less than 0.5 percent of the total.

The US president accuses Democrats of "obstructing", and refusing "to act".

"In my 30 years as an agent, I have never witnessed the conditions we are now facing on the Southwest border", said Rodolfo Karisch, chief patrol agent for the Border Patrol's Rio Grande Valley Sector, which is responsible for 320 miles of the almost 2,000-mile USA border with Mexico. "Our country is full".

Images of cages with children inside that spread on social media a year ago indeed were from the Obama administration. She said investigators had uncovered "child recycling rings, a process in which innocent children are used multiple times to help migrants gain illegal entry".

Human Rights First, a NY based rights group, has described the administration's attempts to portray the screening process as a "loophole" as a "damaging rhetoric" that is "being used to legitimize changes to USA immigration laws that would block families, individuals, and children who have fled persecution".

While the so-called child recycling cases are rare, presenting fake documents at the border has become more common.

"The Border Patrol is facing unprecedented humanitarian and border security crisis". He said being a CBP officer is "an huge task even in the best circumstances" and staffing shortages are compounded by the redeployments, leading to long delays in crossing the border at El Paso, Texas, and other ports of entry.

The policy meant adults were taken to court for criminal proceedings and their children were separated and sent into the care of the Health and Human Services Department.
