U.S. attorney general ready to release Mueller report 'within a week'

Pennsylvania congressman Matt Cartwright said during a House Appropriations Subcommittee hearing Tuesday, where Barr was testifying, that millions would lose their health insurance if a challenge to the Affordable Care Act won its case in Texas.

Barr said he hoped to release a redacted version within a week.

Mr. Barr later released a four-page letter to Congress laying out what he said were Mr. Mueller's main findings and wrote that the Mueller probe did not establish that members of Mr. Trump's election campaign conspired with Russian Federation.

"The process is going along very well", Barr said, "and my original timetable of being able to release this by mid-April stands".

Since then Barr has been under heavy pressure to hand over the entire 400-page report to Congress, where Democrats are seeking to find if there was evidence of impeachable wrongdoing by the president. Rep. Robert Aderholt of Alabama, the top Republican on the subcommittee, chided Democrats by lamenting that "so numerous questions here this morning have gone toward a grassy knoll conspiracy theory regarding the Mueller report".

"Call it what you wish", Barr said, after Democrats accused him of asserting executive privilege in refusing to summarize his conversations. While opening the hearing, subcommittee Chairman Jose Serrano of NY called it "the elephant in the room". "This report is too important to all of us".

Mr. Mueller turned over his confidential report to Mr. Barr last month following his 22-month-long probe into whether Donald Trump may have colluded with Russian Federation during the presidential campaign and if he then obstructed inquiries into the matter. Barr says Mueller's thinking was "not a mystery" to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and other senior Justice Department leaders who had been supervising the probe for almost two years. "The letter on the 29th, I don't believe that was reviewed by Mr. Mueller or that they participated in drafting that letter".

Barr is facing a different type of high-pressure situation as he determines how much of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's report on Russia's role in the 2016 election and contacts between Moscow and Trump's campaign should be made public.

"I have said what I'm going to say about the report today", Barr said.

"From a prosecutor's standpoint", he said, "the bottom line is binary, which is charges or no charges".

Parts of the report are expected to be blacked out to protect information deemed sensitive. Democrats pressed Barr on exceptions to Rule 6 (e) that would allow him to release this information.

Information pertaining to secret grand jury testimony, ongoing investigations, classified intelligence, and un-indicted "peripheral players" will be redacted, Barr maintained.

"I felt I should state bottom-line conclusions, and I tried to use special counsel Mueller's own language in doing that", he said.

Justice Department officials have said Barr intends to continue most of the policies advocated by his predecessor, Jeff Sessions, a former senator from Alabama and strong backer of Trump during the 2016 campaign.

"I suspect that they probably wanted more put out", Barr said. He added, "My intention is not to ask for it at this stage".

Congress, the White House and the American public have been anxiously waiting for Barr to release the report since special counsel Mueller concluded his investigation and sent it to the attorney general more than two weeks ago.

According to Blitzer, the House is far more likely to get an unredacted copy of the Mueller report if Democrats file articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump. The Department of Justice will continue to defend the long-established tradition of protecting grand jury information, " Laco said. But she added: "I look forward to reviewing the Mueller report myself, and I know my constituents do as well".

"It's hard to have that discussion without the contents of the report, isn't it?"

Lawrence asked Barr: "Are you familiar with the data with the percentage?"

Barr said the White House did not review his letter, but he declined to answer questions about whether the White House has been briefed on the report.

He asked whether the Justice Department would look into whether the Federal Bureau of Investigation should have sought a court order to conduct surveillance on former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page.
