Israel Strikes Gaza Terror Sites after Rockets Fired at Tel Aviv

The newspaper said the Iron Dome defense system was activated and intercepted the missiles. Stilln "no damage or injuries were reported", it added in a statement to reporters. Earlier in the evening, sources said the terror group had claimed responsibility for the attacks; that report was later found to be false.

As the Israeli Air Force strikes their first targets in Gaza following Thursday night's rocket attack on Tel Aviv, a red alert was heard in the Eshkol Regional Council.

He said that while "rogue factions" were behind recent Gaza "provocations", it "did not exempt Hamas" of responsibility. So did Hamas, apparently, with a group's official telling Israeli media that Hamas is "not interested in an escalation" and does not know who fired the two rockets.

It was the first time sirens had sounded in the city since the 2014 Gaza war between the territory's dominant Hamas Islamists and Israel.

The Hamas-run Interior Ministry called the rocket fire "outside the national consensus" and said it would exact measures against those behind it.

Islamic Jihad, an Iranian-backed militant group that also has a large rocket arsenal, also denied firing the rockets.

Hamas denied involvement, saying the launches took place as its leaders met Egyptian delegates about efforts to secure a long-term ceasefire with Israel.

The Home Front Command did not give any special instructions to Israelis and said they could continue to carry on as normal.

The attack prompted several municipalities in central Israel to open their public bomb shelters.

All emergency response organizations in the Tel Aviv area increased their alertness following the incident.

Egypt's mission to Gaza has also been reported to be evacuating from the enclave as well. The IDF usually does not fire Iron Dome batteries if a rocket is calculated by army systems to land in the sea.

According to reports, a number of Israelis were treated for shock. It said it had identified a launch attempt out of Gaza, but the rocket misfired and landed inside Palestinian territory.

The missile launches come less than a month before the April 9 Knesset elections, and two months before Tel Aviv is due to host the Eurovision Song Contest, a major global event that is expected to draw many thousands of tourists from all over Europe.

Earlier, in Tel Aviv, air raid sirens were heard wailing after rockets were launched from Gaza.
