Captain Marvel impresses at the box office

The latest Marvel offering continued the studio's domination overseas, with a $302 million opening weekend, putting the total worldwide gross over three days at a whopping $455 million.

Brie Larson gave Marvel fans a pleasant surprise on Saturday night when she was spotted attending a New Jersey showing of her new movie Captain Marvel.

But "Captain Marvel" continues a streak of box-office juggernauts about women and people of color.

This makes it the fifth highest worldwide opening weekend of all time and the second highest superhero opening weekend of all time - with Avengers: Infinity War taking the top spot at an opening of $640m. The film is scheduled to open in Japan on March 15. The end credits also teased the pre-existing Nick Fury and Carol Danvers relationship that was explored in Captain Marvel. To combat the down-voting issue in advance of "Captain Marvel", Rotten Tomatoes (which doesn't require users to verify that they've seen a movie that they're scoring) removed the ability to rate movies prior to release.

Captain Marvel is now playing in theaters!

"Marvel Studios once again proves that stories combining diverse perspectives and different experiences make great movies that play to everybody".

Larson's Captain Marvel character is also expected to appear in "Avengers: Endgame" due out April 26. "From China to North America and Germany, these results once again demonstrate IMAX's ability to help launch break-out global blockbusters and is a fantastic start to what is shaping up to be an incredibly strong year for the industry".

Audiences in the USA and Canada for "Captain Marvel" were 55 percent male and 45 percent female. The film stars Julianne Moore and a middle-aged Los Angeles divorcee. 9 of the Top 10 grossing theatres were IMAX locations.
