Bill Might End Daylight Saving Time

This year, Daylight Saving Time ends Sunday, November 3 at 2am.

"During daylight hours is when our "awake hormone" is released, and as it nighttime approaches, our bodies will release more melatonin, 'the sleepy hormone, '" said child sleep consultant Heather Young.

It's not really daylight saving time that's drawing fire: It's standard time. Sen. Before that, individual states could come up with their own versions of Daylight Saving Time, which, as you can imagine, was chaotic.

The clock changes can also raise the risk of accidents by sleep-deprived motorists.

The interruption can kill people: Incidents of heart attacks, strokes, and fatal vehicle accidents all spike around the start of daylight-saving time each year. They believed having more daylight hours would help conserve energy, which seems like a no brainer. The annual change allows people to have an extra hour of daylight after their work or school activities in the warmer months.

History shows whatever effect DST had on the German war effort wasn't enough to help them win The Great War.

Two states - Hawaii and Arizona - are already exempt from the 1966 Uniform Time Act establishing daylight saving time. But it still wasn't a universal practice.

The next time the clocks move forward, Carrier recommends preparing yourself several days in advance by going to bed and waking up a little earlier each day before Daylight Saving Time. "I know they have a lot of more important headaches", Chu told The Washington Post.

On this side of the Atlantic, nearly all of Canada changes its clocks today, with notable exceptions being most of Saskatchewan, bits of Nunavut and those parts of B.C. where people are technically in this province, but think of Alberta as their real dad.

DST is observed in almost all parts of the USA except Hawaii and parts of Arizona, according to CNN. Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and American Samoa also skip out on the clock-changing fun.

- Parts of Canada: There are a handful of small exceptions, and one large one.

Saskatchewan, meanwhile - the only province that follows central standard time (CST) year-round - will go out of sync with Manitoba on Sunday. The clocks officially change at 2 a.m. local time wherever a person is in the country.

Not ever place observes DST, however. Haiti also observed it last year and is expected to again this year, but didn't in 2016 and before 2012.

Floridians - like the rest of us - will just have to go with the flow, for now at least. Some notable exceptions who do include Iran, Israel and Syria. But remember, their seasons are the opposite of ours. This week, Florida Senators Marco Rubio and Rick Scott as well as Rep. Vern Buchanan reintroduced the Sunshine Protection Act, which wants to implement Daylight Saving Time all year. Congress however must ultimately approve. The Florida Legislature passed a bill last spring to stay on Daylight Savings Time year round, but the change requires federal approval, but that never happened. A state commission recommended MA do the same. And other study saw that workers sustained both a higher number of injuries and more severe injuries on the Monday after the time change. OR would still need voter approval if the bill passes and all states will need congressional approval to make the change.
