Adviser Says Trump 'Gave Nothing Away' in North Korea Talks

"For the Democrats to interview in open hearings a convicted liar & fraudster, at the same time as the very important Nuclear Summit with North Korea, is perhaps a new low in American politics and may have contributed to the 'walk.'" Trump said on Twitter, referring to his decision to walk away from what he previously said was a bad deal with Kim.

President Trump suggested in a tweet on Sunday that the timing of his former attorney Michael Cohen's testimony before the House Oversight Committee "may have contributed" to failed denuclearization talks between the US and North Korea.

At the same time in Washington, Trump's former aide Cohen was testifying before the US House of Representatives' oversight committee, accusing Trump of ordering his personal attorney to make threats for him about 500 times over the past 10 years.

"I never think it is helpful to have-I don't care what president's in office-to have contentious hearings like that when there is some serious negotiations happening overseas", Rogers said.

The summit's collapse followed the leaders' historic meeting in Singapore, which produced only a vague commitment from Kim to work "toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".

Bolton's evocation of progress was dismissed by leading Democrats, however, including House Intelligence Committee chairman Adam Schiff, who described the Hanoi meeting as a "spectacular failure". In a press conference that followed, Trump said he was forced to call off the signing of an agreement due to North Korea's demands for all sanctions to be lifted.

"I didn't think this went well for the president at all, more importantly, for US national security", Rogers said.

"I don't think the leverage gets reduced because I think we will keep the maximum pressure campaign in place even before the summit", the USA national security advisor said.

President Trump has been accused of siding with the likes of Kim, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Saudi Arabia Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman amid allegations of brutality, human rights abuses, and even murder - which have been denied for their part.

"But we've tried to make it clear to them - as again the president has said this repeatedly we're not going to make the mistakes of past administrations".

Asked whether that was his view, too, Bolton replied: "The president's view is he gave nothing away". Neither side says they would pull out of diplomacy.

Speaking later on CNN's State of the Union, Bolton said that his own opinion on Warmbier's treatment didn't matter and that he was Trump's national security advisor, not the "national security decision maker". I give my advice to the president.

Also Sunday, Trump says the reason he canceled large-scale springtime military drills with South Korea is to save "hundreds of millions of dollars" for which the U.S.is never reimbursed.

But Bolton added that there was "no expiration" date on the diplomatic track with North Korea and that the continuing nuclear production did not reduce Washington's leverage.
