Governor Cuomo 'Working Intensely' To Bring Amazon Back To New York

These are issues that other cities which house giant tech companies - like Seattle and San Francisco - are still fighting, but critics say that NY didn't do enough to ensure that the city wouldn't face the same problems when HQ2 moved into Long Island City.

Cuomo was interviewed on WNYC radio the day an open letter from business leaders appeared in The New York Times urging Amazon not to abandon the New York plans.

Robert Freeman, the executive director of the State Committee on Open Government, and an expert on the state's FOIL law, said that logs of telephone calls between Amazon and the Governor are a matter of public record.

Amazon declined to comment for this story, but the Times said Thursday that "Amazon executives gave no sense that it would reconsider".

The letter was signed by supportive unions, local businesses, community groups and elected officials including Reps.

Cuomo said the letter is meant to let other companies to know that NY is "open for business". Signatories include the CEOs from JetBlue, Hearst, MasterCard and Deloitte.

That question will remain even after the dust settles in Nashville, New York and Northern Virginia, where even Abraham concedes the chance of derailing Amazon's plans is a long shot. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez isn't the darling of all Democrats in NY. But when we commit to a project as important as this, we figure out how to get it done in a way that works for everyone. "Governor Cuomo will take personal responsibility for the project's state approval and Mayor de Blasio will work together with the governor to manage the community development process".

The New York Times reports Cuomo has also spoken with other executives and offered guarantees of support for the project.

Activists' success in NY has emboldened opponents across the country.

But he added, "We don't want anyone to think that NY doesn't understand that we are the home of entrepreneurial business, and we want young people coming here and new talent". I hope that they reconsider.

"Opinions are strong in NY - sometimes strident", the letter noted.

Asked how much of the blame should be on Amazon for the loss of the Long Island City campus, given that they pulled out so early in the process, before any of the actual planning started, Wylde responded, "If you're participating in a process and you don't like it, and you don't like how you're being treated, and you decide to leave, yeah, they can be blamed but what good does that do us?"

The New York location had an estimated incremental tax revenue of generating more than $10 billion over the next 20 years. Amazon is moving ahead with plans to bring 25,000 to 37,000 jobs to the Crystal City neighborhood of Northern Virginia, and says it will spread jobs that had been planned for NY around other company hubs. Those concerns didn't stop more than 200 cities across the country from competing to lure the tech giant when it embarked on a yearlong search for a so-called HQ2 that would bring 50,000 or more high-paying jobs.

The deal, reached after a year's search, held out the promise of 25,000 to 40,000 new jobs for NY, and in return the city and state offered as much as $3 billion in tax breaks and grants.

Cuomo singled out fellow Democrats who control the state Senate for blame after Amazon pulled out of the deal February 14.
