Singer Katy Perry’s Blackface Shoes Pulled from Store Shelves

Katy Perry's fashion line has pulled two types of shoes after some people compared them to blackface.

In 2016, high-end winter sports brand Moncler released a series of designs featuring a black face with prominent red lips.

"Regarding Katy Perry's shoes; if you have to second guess whether a design is blackface/racist.it probably is".

In a statement, Perry, 34, told The Hollywood Reporter she was "saddened" by the comparison and had removed the shoes from sale.

On Tuesday, Perry released a statement to Entertainment Tonight, saying the shoes, initially released last summer, were "envisioned as a nod to modern art and surrealism".

Sources connected to Katy tell us these specific shoes are just part of an entire line of shoes she's designed and released ... and they were never meant to be offensive. "Our intention was never to inflict any pain".

At the time of writing, neither pair of shoes is available on Katy Perry Collections' site nor on Dillard's online, though they were available on Dillard's earlier Monday.

Katy Perry said she was "saddened" by the fact the shoes has been compared to blackface.

The news comes on the heels of critics slamming the "Dark Horse" hitmaker's performance on social media Sunday night for her tribute to Dolly Parton at the Grammy Awards, alongside others stars like Kasey Musgraves and Miley Cyrus. "We have immediately removed them from katyperrycollections.com".

In December, Prada also apologised and pulled a monkey bag charm that resembled blackface. The sweater was pulled after criticism from consumers.
