Huawei: Tackling security concerns may take five years

In January, Poland arrested a Chinese employee of the world's biggest producer of telecommunications equipment on spying allegations, along with a former Polish security official.

Jan 15. 2019: Daryl Godfrey, SaskTel's chief technology officer, speaks to reporters about SaskTel's involvement with Huawei, and his confidence that SaskTel's Huawei equipment is safe and properly tested.

Thailand's cooperation with Huawei on the test bed does not mean it is not concerned about security issues, minister of digital economy Pichet Durongkaveroj told Reuters at the launch.

"Huawei is a closely watched company", he said.

Pichet was speaking at the test site in Chonburi, the heart of the Thai military government's $45 billion economic project - the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC)- about 90 km (55.92 miles) southeast of Bangkok. But it has not yet signed a 5G contract in Thailand.

The schedule to rectify the problems outlined by Huawei in its letter was in line with the expectations of the government's oversight board, a source with knowledge of its operations said.

Asked if the United States had reached out to Thailand about barring Huawei, Pichet said: "I have no knowledge of that".

The main basis for Washington's fears is a perception that Huawei is linked to the Chinese government and that the use of the company's equipment risks the possibility of backdoors that could be used for espionage.

Huawei still faces a long battle ahead as regulators, politics and security concerns present roadblocks - at the end of the day, Huawei has to somehow convince governments worldwide that it's not spying on anyone.

In the speech, Huawei says it takes cybersecurity very seriously and believes it "should remain as a technical issue instead of an ideological issue".

Should the ban on Chinese networking hardware go into full effect, the statement indicates that there will be great pressure on Europe to follow suit in avoiding the use of Chinese cellular equipment.

Citing a matter of national security, the USA has not only called for Huawei's ban in the country, but has also urged its allies to do the same.

Alibaba, Tencent, Kingsoft and JD.com have also pledged to invest in the EEC.

Any Western country allowing equipment from Huawei Technologies or other Chinese makers to be used in critical infrastructure projects will face the risk of USA countermeasures, the U.S. envoy to the European Union said.

The report of the board - which is chaired by National Cyber Security Centre chief executive Ciaran Martin - found that "technical issues have been identified in Huawei's engineering processes, leading to new risks in the United Kingdom telecommunications networks".

Since 2012, the world's largest maker of networking equipment, Huawei, has been barred from selling those products in the US on the explanation of security concerns by the USA government.
