Jayson Tatum for Anthony Davis is never happening

The Lakers' have "pulled out" of discussions to acquire All-Star big man Anthony Davis, the Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday afternoon, citing an unidentified person with knowledge of the situation who described the Pelicans' trade requests as "outrageous".

But none of that appears to have convinced the Pelicans brass to a point where they feel compelled to send Davis to his Malibu abode, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Initial offers for Davis included the Lakers offering up Brandon Ingram, Kyle Kuzma, Lonzo Ball, Micheal Beasley, Lance Stephenson, and Rajon Rondo, as well as two first-round picks.

Davis deemed the deal worthy of a double tap on instagram, but apparently it wasn't enough for the Pels. Davis requested a trade last week and is not eligible for free agency until July of 2020. Meanwhile, the Lakers are up against the clock as the trade deadline is this Thursday (Feb. 7) at 3 PM/ET. And until any of the other teams on Davis' list submit a trade offer, that will remain unclear. National Basketball Association salary cap rules prevent the Celtics from acquiring Davis until July 1, when Kyrie Irving is eligible to become a free agent.

The Lakers essentially feel they're owed Davis, but New Orleans isn't buying that notion.

The trade as constructed above gives the Pelicans everything thing they said they wanted by providing the organization the opportunity to swing for the fences on the possibility that any of the three Lakers kids will become all-NBA performers.

Whether this is actually the end of talks between the two teams remains to be seen.

My interest in this has less to do with New Orleans and more to do with the idea ofDamian Lillard and Anthony Davis becoming a way-more-fun Stockton-and-Malone in one of the NBA's most viable small markets.

That is a rather large haul for the Pelicans, who probably feel like that same deal will be available to them this summer. Davis will garner a super-max contract upward of $240 million whenever he lands.

Giving in to the Pelicans' demands for between six and eight draft picks would have been lunacy.

At the same time, if the Pelicans are hoping that one day in the next few months that Danny Ainge is going to offer Jayson Tatum, they need to think again.

"To Nola, that means Lakers offering 4 first-round and second-round picks as part of Davis package".
