Two Bodies Found In Townsville Floodwaters

Townsville has been brought to a standstill by severe flooding after an all-time record rainfall, the premier of Queensland, Annastacia Palaszczuk, said Saturday.

An aerial shot of the flooding in Townsville on 4 February.

The city received almost 50 inches of rain in the past seven days, breaking records of the most rain in one week, which was set in 1998, with 39.9 inches in Townsville.

Up to 20,000 homes are at risk of being flooded.

Emergency crews, including about 1,500 members of the Australian military, helped rescue people and their pets with inflatable boats.

Since Jan. 26, there has been close to 2 feet of rain in Townsville, a coastal city in the state of Queensland, and up to twice that in surrounding areas, eclipsing records set in 1998 during a flood known as the "Night of Noah".

Desperate residents had to contend not only with flash flooding, landslides and power blackouts, but also several saltwater crocodile sightings in residential roads and cul-de-sacs.

Meanwhile, tornadoes and waterspouts were spotted off Townsville yesterday in the intensifying monsoon dumping a phenomenal 100mm an hour - on top of a record one-metre total rainfall - over the disaster zone in North Queensland.

"My thinking is the support for Townsville people", the prime minister responded.

Water releases from the dam sparked emergency flood alerts late on Sunday, with residents in 21 Townsville suburbs told to move to safety.

She said the dam floodgates had to be released "to make sure the water had somewhere to go".

The monsoon trough that has delivered disaster to Townsville has also generated floods out west, with farmers around Cloncurry, McKinlay and Flinders shire reporting livestock losses.

Speaking Monday, Palaszczuk warned: "There's going to be heavy rainfall over the next couple of days".

Police would not immediately confirm media reports that the bodies had been recovered a day after two men disappeared near flood waters in the Townsville suburb of Aitkenvale.

"You know that's not exactly what we've planned for and it really is new parameters we're moving into". "This situation is unprecedented", she said.

He understood the decision but said it was demoralising to see the destruction at his Hermit Park park home. Residents were warned of a "risk to life" and "unprecedented flooding" that could affect up to 20,000 homes.

The army has been helping to protect homes with sandbags, while rescue teams have been evacuating people using rafts.

The Queensland Police tweeted: "Schools from Halixfax, Townsvile & Giru that were closed on Friday will remain closed tomorrow".

But that was before dam releases were doubled in anticipation of more rain, sending nearly 2000 cubic metres of water per second charging out of the Ross River Dam.

The deluge comes amid a severe drought in the eastern inland of the vast Australian continent, including parts of Queensland state, that has left graziers struggling to stay afloat.
