Chinese trade deal ‘unacceptable’ unless Beijing opens markets, says Trump

China urged Washington on Thursday to accept its industrial development after USA intelligence officials said Beijing steals or copies foreign technology, as the two sides prepared for another day of talks aimed at ending a tariff war over Beijing's technology ambitions.

Cabinet-level officials, led by Liu, who is Xi's top economic adviser, and US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, met in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building next to the White House on Wednesday with only a month left to reach a deal. If both sides fail to reach an agreement by March 1, USA tariffs on Chinese goods will be raised to 25 percent from 10 percent.

As part of the truce deal between Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping in early December last year, China agreed to deliver structural changes that Washington has been demanding for years. "All of the many problems are being discussed and will be hopefully resolved", he wrote. "China does not want an increase in Tariffs and feels they will do much better if they make a deal".

President Xi said China has given a lot of attention to the Beijing Winter Olympics, and all preparations are in order and are being undertaken.

The U.S. complaints, along with accusations of Chinese cyber theft of U.S. trade secrets and a systematic campaign to acquire U.S. technology firms, were used by the Trump administration to justify punitive U.S. tariffs on $250 billion worth of Chinese imports.

The talks began two days after the United States charged Chinese telecommunications company Huawei Technologies Co Ltd and its chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, with conspiring to violate USA sanctions on Iran by doing business through a subsidiary it tried to hide.

Liu He is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chief of the Chinese side of the China-U.S. comprehensive economic dialogue.

A new round of talks with Beijing are taking place this week in Washington.

The report also said that the law could help attract more foreign investment to China, protect foreign investors' legal rights and interests, and provide a favorable business environment.

"China's top trade negotiators are in the USA meeting with our representatives". Trump was meeting on Thursday afternoon with the Chinese negotiators. Asked how the talks were going, Yi flashed a thumbs-up sign.

A Chinese delegation is in Washington this week to discuss the broad strokes of an agreement to end the trade war the two countries have fighting for almost a year.

The administration has imposed tariffs on $250 billion in Chinese imports; Beijing has retaliated with import taxes on $110 billion in U.S. goods.

Chinese officials have said their policies do not coerce technology transfers. Treasury Secretary Mnuchin and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross have insisted there is no link between the trade talks and Huawei case.

Chinese officials are resistant to the wholesale changes sought by the U.S. and the charges against Huawei - one of China's biggest and most successful technology firms - have added to the political tensions.

The U.S. document was sent to the WTO's subsidies committee in response to a notification by China about subsidies programs it is obliged to disclose for transparency purposes.
