$298M Powerball jackpot a surprise win for Brooklyn, NY, truck driver

That was the reaction of a Brooklyn dad who was the lone victor of last month's $298.3 million Powerball, the second-largest jackpot in NY state history.

"I dragged myself in to go to work", Johnson said, adding he went to the same gas station he goes to every morning to fill his truck up across the street from his job. His was the third consecutive New Yorker to win a 2018 lottery drawing.

Johnson has opted to take the cash lump sum payment of $180 million, which after taxes comes out to be about $114 million.

Johnson called out sick the next day, and even though he got a call from a friend saying the winning ticket had been sold at the gas station where he bought his, he said, "That's not me man, that's not my luck" and didn't check to see if he had the winning numbers.

David Johnson, 56, of East New York, stepped forward on Friday with the winning ticket in hand in order to claim the huge payout. "I start and can't finish my food", Johnson told Fox 5 NY.

Johnson, who has been playing the lottery for 40 years, said he was taking a sick day from work when he stopped at a nearby gas station after collecting his pay cheque.

The winning numbers for the December 26 drawing were 5, 25, 38, 52, 67 and Powerball 24. Later that day, a co-worker called Johnson to let him know there was a victor.

His winning ticket was purchased on Boxing Day.

Johnson says he plans to buy a nice house - in Brooklyn, of course.
