Netflix has no plans to cut 'Bird Box' scene despite outcry

"Results won't push its stock higher from here, with most of the good news already priced in after a massive rally earlier this month", said senior analyst Haris Anwar.

The service now has 139 million subscribers globally. The stock had risen nearly 50 per cent since hitting a recent low in December.

Without a blowout quarter or ambitious forecast, shares fell 4 percent in after-hours trading to $339.40. The loss will start to shrink thereafter, the company said.

While they apparently have no intention of removing the video clips outright from the films, they have said they will try to replace them if they can.

Netflix will also be boosting prices of some other subscription plans and will apply those rates to Latin America and Caribbean countries where it bills customers in United States dollars.

Additionally, Netflix measures views on the account level, not the profile level. What's more, there has been no evidence that any of Netflix's previous price hikes have done anything to reduce membership in a material way.

The company is also facing some serious competition from the likes of AT&T ($T), Disney ($DIS), and Comcast ($CMCSA), all of which are looking to emulate the streaming giant's success. That's in addition to rival services on the market from Amazon, Hulu and Google's YouTube. One obvious solution is to increase the price of a monthly subscription, something Netflix did just a few days ago.

Analysts estimate that Netflix spent more than $13bn on movies and shows this year. Out of the new subscribers, 1.53 million came from the U.S.

During the fourth quarter, Netflix added 8.8 million paid memberships, 1.5 million in the USA and 7.3 million internationally.

But there may still be room to grow.

A Disney streaming service might grow to account for tens of millions of hours of USA television viewing over the course of several years, but that is out of a dizzying amount of total time spent watching, Hastings said during an earnings presentation. Its focus is on growing usage by improving the overall viewing experience for customers. "I thought: No way". How long do people have to watch something before it counts in Netflix's stats?

Netflix claims to command 10 percent of America's TV time in its latest quarterly report on Thursday, which also called out "Fortnite" as its biggest competitive concern.

In its letter to investors, Netflix delivered some details on how well its highly popular "Bird Box" movie performed, saying in its first four weeks the Sandra Bullock horror film reached 80 million households.
