Dulles TSA checkpoints reduced after record staff call-outs amid snow storm, shutdown

The agency says it "will hold those responsible appropriately accountable".

Delta Air Lines also issued a statement to CNN, saying that "upon the customer's disclosure, the airline reported the incident to the TSA". The rate is more than double the 3.2 per cent rate experienced a year ago.

Second Harvest Food Bank in Tennessee told the Knoxville News Sentinel that it sent almost 100 emergency food packages to McGhee Tyson Airport after receiving an "unprecedented" request from the local American Federation of Government Employees union to provide them for the facility's TSA workers.

"Mondays are typically very busy days at Hartsfield-Jackson, but this morning we did feed the impact of the federal shutdown more than we have thus far", Durham said.

Hundreds of thousands of federal workers have been struggling to pay for basic necessities as the shutdown has reached its 24th day, making it the longest government shutdown in USA history, thanks to President Donald Trump's refusal to sign any appropriations bill that doesn't include $5.7 billion for a southwestern border wall.

- Passengers trying to get through domestic checkpoints at Atlanta's Hartfield-Jackson International Airport were facing lengthy waits and long lines on Monday, the first business day after security screeners missed paychecks for the first time due to partial government shutdown. The airport reported the long lines on its website Monday morning, showing the hour-plus waits at all three checkpoints in the domestic terminal. The predicament has led to an increasing number of agents missing work over the last three weeks. "They have to pay their bills, they have to feed their family, they have to take care of everything", said Jamie McPherson, with the Crisis Center, who is also a former TSA employee.

However, the TSA dismissed suggestions the government shutdown contributed to the security lapse and said a normal amount of staffers were working that day.

TSA said that it screened 1.97 million people yesterday and that 99.1 per cent waited less than 30 minutes, and 93.1 per cent less than 15 minutes.

ABC News saw employees of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on Monday delivering donuts and words of encouragement to TSA officers at a security checkpoint. Passengers flying in or out of Terminal B were routed to one of two other facilities.

The message adds that security standards "remain uncompromised" at the nation's airports.

When contacted for comment by PEOPLE, the Georgia public affairs spokesperson for TSA did not immediately respond to questions.
