Syrian air defence fires on enemy targets above Damascus

"Only a ministry of transport warehouse at Damascus global airport was hit", SANA cited the military source as saying.

Hezbollah's Al-Manar TV said the attack was broader than usual, targeting areas ranging from the eastern Damascus suburb of Dmeir to Kiswa, south of the capital, all the way to the village of Dimas, in the west near the Lebanon border.

The Israeli jets reportedly crossed over to Syria through Lebanese airspace after having heavily roamed over Lebanon on Thursday.

SANA further quoted an unnamed Ministry of Transport official as saying that the Damascus International Airport traffic was normal and that it was not affected by the Israeli aggression.

The strikes were first reported a little before midnight in Damascus by the Syrian News Agency. However, the Arab country's air defense systems have thwarted most of the attacks. The last time the IAF hit the same area was on December 25, 2018.

Israel had previously said it will not tolerate Iran seeking to establish permanent military bases in Syria as the war there winds down after seven years of fighting.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday confirmed his nation destroyed Iranian weapons caches in Syria's Damascus airport during airstrikes over the weekend.

Syrian state media broadcast footage of what it said were the air defenses firing, with bright lights seen shooting across the night sky.

The United States has said repeatedly that it will continue to support Israel's right to defend itself against Iran and Hezbollah, including through targeted strikes in Syria, in the wake of its decision to remove American forces from the country.
