Federer 'shocked', Djokovic 'hurt' by Murray retirement bombshell

Roger Federer says Andy Murray is a "legend" and the game's top players will be "hit hard" by his retirement.

The world number one and last year's runner-up will face Estonia's Kaia Kanepi in the first round.

He broke down in tears as he confirmed the Australian Open would be his last, but was hopeful he'd be able to end his career in front of his home crowd at Wimbledon in July.

The American returned from giving birth to her first child a year ago and went on to reach consecutive Grand Slam finals at Wimbledon and the US Open. "We are very fond of him and he is a great person to have around the club".

Murray is scheduled to face Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut in his opening round match on Monday in a match which, if he loses, could potentially be his final appearance on the worldwide tennis circuit. "Obviously it was something that I really wanted, a big dream of mine to win a grand slam, and it was an awesome feeling and an incredible two weeks".

"Of course, it hits us top guys hard because we know Andy very well", the world number three said of the three-time Grand Slam champion and double Olympic gold medal victor. Anybody would substitute their career with his.

Murray has won all three of his previous matches against Bautista Agut but that was when he could, you know, put his socks on without feeling excruciating pain.

"The top are very close, there isn't a dominant figure that we know is going to win all of the time".

Wozniacki - who has been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis - told reporters: "I think it's sad, I'm sad on behalf of Andy because Andy is so fun for me to watch".

Few people would have put money on Murray being the first of the "big four" of tennis to retire, and his imminent exit is a stark reminder that this golden generation can not go on forever.

"Did we play mixed doubles?" she said.

Second seed Angelique Kerber, the 2016 champion, has an opening match against Slovakia's Polona Hercog, while Petra Kvitova, fresh from winning the Sydney International on Saturday, plays Magdalena Rybarikova.

"I talked to him a little bit yesterday actually, ran into him at the hotel".

"It's a tough one, but one down the road he can look back on and be incredibly proud of everything he has achieved". He didn't tally as many titles as the other members of the Big Four, but he broke decades-long droughts for British men in majors and at Wimbledon, and became the first player to win consecutive singles gold medals at the Olympics.

Murray is due to play 22nd seed Roberto Bautista Agut on Monday in an Australian Open first-round match that could represent his last appearance on the professional tour.
