Unredacted Manafort filing hints at Russian Federation collusion

That's according to a court filing from defense lawyers Tuesday responding to allegations that Manafort has repeatedly lied to special counsel Robert Mueller's team of investigators.

Attorneys for Paul Manafort, former Trump campaign chairman, submitted a poorly redacted filing on Tuesday revealing that Manafort shared polling data with a Russian operative during the campaign. A week after Mueller's court filing, a Vox report alleged that Manafort's communications may have dealt with him suggesting methods that the administration could use to combat Mueller's investigation in the media.

Paul Manafort shared 2016 presidential campaign polling data with Konstantin Kilimnik, an associate the Federal Bureau of Investigation has said has ties to Russian intelligence, according to a court filing.

The sections posted online also stated that Mueller's office believes that Manafort lied to prosecutors about his discussions with Kilimnik about a "Ukrainian peace plan" and a meeting that Manafort had with Kilimnik when they both were in Madrid.

Kilimnik has denied working for Russian intelligence.

Manafort pleaded guilty in September 2018 to conspiracy charges and agreed to cooperate with Mueller's office in its probe of Russian interference in the election - but prosecutors say he broke that agreement by telling "multiple discernible lies".

Kilimnik has always been suspected to be central to Mueller's investigation into Russian influence in the 2016 presidential election.

According to the filing, prosecutors say Manafort lied to investigators about sharing the data with Kiliminik.

U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson gave Manafort's lawyers until Monday to respond to the allegation in writing and said prosecutors must provide their underlying evidence by January 14.

The court filing does not reveal when that meeting took place, but an unredacted section that follows highlights that it is "not uncommon, however, for a witnesses to have only a vague recollection about events that occured years prior" and that "these occurrences happened during a period when Mr. Manafort was managing a US presidential campaign and had countless meetings, email communications, and other interactions with many different individuals, and traveled frequently". Those alleged lies were said to involve issues including Manafort's contacts with Trump administration officials.

Manafort's attorneys reported he has been suffering from severe gout, anxiety and depression - conditions that may have affected his ability to recall events during his tumultuous service on the Trump campaign.

"The second example identified by the Special Counsel is hearsay purportedly offered by an undisclosed third party and the defense has not been provided with the statement", Manafort's attorneys said.

They say the circumstances of his confinement "weighed heavily on Mr. Manafort's state of mind and on his memory" as he was questioned.

The longtime Republican consultant already faces a possible maximum, 10-year prison sentence in his District of Columbia case under federal guidelines for conspiring to cheat the Internal Revenue Service, violate foreign-lobbying laws and tamper with witnesses.

Manafort was convicted in federal court in Virginia in August of bank fraud and tax evasion connected to his work in Ukraine. In return, prosecutors said they would consider asking the judge for leniency at his eventual sentencing.
