Novak Djokovic reacts to shock Qatar Open semi-final defeat

The world No 1, who had won the event twice before and will be looking to win a seventh Australian Open title later this month, won the first set but could not hold off the world No 24 in a 3-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-4 defeat.

Bautista Agut, 30, had lost his past three meetings with Berdych, the 33-year-old former world number four who has slipped to 71 in the rankings.

"I will remember this match for [the rest] of my life", Bautista Agut said.

Next up for the top seed will be Roberto Bautista Agut from Spain. With the quality of tennis displayed against Novak Djokovic, Roberto will be the favorite going into the finals.

Another day, another struggle for Novak Djokovic.

That game he eventually lost, but asked if he was playing too much, Djokovic simply said: "I'm fine, I'll be fine".

The shock result breaks a run of five consecutive finals reached by Djokovic, who had also won 13 matches in a row in Doha.

The Serb cruised through the opening set before Bautista Agut dragged the contest into a decider by edging the tiebreak in the second set.

"What happened? I lost the match".

By contrast, Bautista Agut had a comparatively simple straight sets win over former Grand Slam champion Sam Wawrinka, beating the Swiss 6-4, 6-4.

Despite winning the first set, Novak was not in control of the match, as Bautista Agut refused to back down, hitting thunderous forehands, and playing solid tennis from the baseline, and holding off Novak Djokovic in 3 sets to register a memorable victory. I had to play a lot of lines and serve very well.

But Agut, victor of last year's Dubai Championships, lost only five points on his serve in the final set and wrapped up the contest on his first match point.

Djokovic broke the Spaniard in the second game of the first set to take a 2-0 lead.

"I think Stan is a really good player". The Serbian has been nearly unbeatable on hard courts over the last six months, but Bautista-Agut trumped him in a tactical masterclass.
