Canadian teenager Bianca Andreescu reaches her first WTA final at ASB Classic

Andreescu didn't relent with her attacking style, though, and it suddenly started to pay off as she raced away to take the second set 6-1.

Saturday's match will be her first semifinal at a WTA tournament, a feat she has achieved in memorable fashion.

If she can find a way to win that, she'll have one of Julia Goerges (world No. 14, who beat Genie Bouchard in three sets today) or Viktoria Kuzmova (No. 50) waiting for her in the final.

"I think it's really important to me to just stay in the present moment and I think I've been doing that this whole week and I'm beyond grateful right now". An injury-marred 2018 saw the young Canadian consolidate her Top 200 position with a 43-18 win-loss record in ITF tournaments and WTA qualifying, but she fell in the final round of qualifying at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon - the closest she came to a WTA-level main draw previous year.

"I believe that anything is possible and tonight I think I did the impossible", Andreescu, who had to win three qualifying matches just to get into the tournament, said in an on-court interview after the match.

"My goal was only to qualify and maybe get a couple of rounds in but now I've beaten a couple of top players", Andreescu said.

She then lost two straight games but broke her opponent for the set.

The first signs of life from Kuzmova came when she was down 0-40 and 5-0 in the opening set.

But with the next point she ripped a victor and on her third matchpoint Kuzmova cracked a return straight into the net.

The contest against Wozniacki was Andreescu's first match in history against a top-10 player. "I was still aggressive, but not aggressive as much as I wanted to be". I had an awesome week, I beat a lot of top players.

"I guess Auckland brings out the best in me. The more matches you play, the more book is written about your type of game", said Downey.
