Russian Federation under pressure of states perceiving it as 'a competitor', says Lavrov

The summary states the Russian leader wrote: "Russia-US relations are the most important factor behind ensuring strategic stability and worldwide security".

Russian President Vladimir Putin sent Christmas and New Year greetings to heads of state of dozens of countries and leaders of worldwide organizations, the Kremlin said Sunday.

The Russian minister also noted that the USA openly state the need for the containment of Russia, China, Iran and North Korea.

The message to Mr Trump was among dozens of holiday greetings Mr Putin sent to other world leaders, each tailored to reflect a bilateral theme.

In a separate letter to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Putin pledged continuation of aid to the Syrian government and people in the "fight against terrorism, in defence of state sovereignty and territorial integrity".

Also on Monday, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev exchanged New Year greetings.

The ministry also said that the Russian military had deployed Pantsir-S and S-400 complexes this year in Crimea, annexed from Ukraine in 2014, as well as in its Arctic region, the Kaliningrad exclave on the Baltic Sea, and in its eastern-most Khabarovsk region.

The events are believed to be carefully stage-managed to appeal to the president's huge number of supporters in Russian Federation.

The State Department announced December 4 that the United States would give Russian Federation 60 days to come into compliance with the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty or the United States would consider the treaty void.

The landmark arms control treaty bans either side from stationing short-and intermediate-range, land-based missiles in Europe. "I think this is a well-justified reason (to play hockey) ahead of the new year", said Mr Putin.

In 2018, the Russia-China comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination reached an unprecedented level with substantiated political dialogues and rapidly expanding two-way trade, Putin said.
