2018 deadliest year for journalists, 53 killed on the job

Hatred whipped up by "unscrupulous politicians" has contributed to the shocking rise in the number of journalists murdered in 2018, a media watchdog said Tuesday.

Four of the American journalists were killed in the Capital Gazette shooting in Annapolis, Maryland, on June 28.

Political leaders must stand up, speak out, and deliver justice on behalf of the journalists who gave their lives to bring us the news."CPJ's database of journalists killed in 2018 includes capsule reports on each victim and filters for examining trends in the data". Two other journalists died on the job when they were killed by a falling tree while covering a storm in North Carolina in May.

At least 63 reporters across the world were killed while carrying out their professional duties in 2018 - a 15% increase over past year, according to the journalism advocacy group Reporters Without Borders.

In Afghanistan 13 journalists were killed in 2018. "Violence against journalists has reached unprecedented levels this year, and the situation is now critical", said the organisation's head, Christophe Deloire. The CIA determined that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman ordered Khashoggi's murder, according to the Post.

"The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia rejects the position expressed recently by the US Senate, which was based upon unsubstantiated claims and allegations, and contained blatant interferences in the Kingdom's internal affairs, undermining the Kingdom's regional and global role", its Foreign Ministry said in a. Yet the committee noted that he has called some "enemies of the people". The report adds 61 percent of the killing was in retaliation for their work.

Saudi Arabia on Thursday said it was creating government bodies to boost oversight of its intelligence operations, in the wake of worldwide outrage over critic Jamal Khashoggi's murder.

The murder of Saudi Arabian journalist Hamal Khashoggi was singled out as "the most illustrative case" of a lack of world leadership on journalists' rights and safety.

Afghanistan was the deadliest country for journalists; 15 media workers were killed in violent attacks.

Afghanistan, where extremists have stepped up deliberate attacks on journalists, was the deadliest country, followed by Syria and India.

Time magazine last week recognized jailed and killed journalists as its "person of the year", including Khashoggi, Maria Ressa imprisoned in the Philippines, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo imprisoned in Myanmar, and staff at the Capital Gazette.

"Non-professional journalists play a fundamental role in the production of news and information in countries with oppressive regimes and countries at war, where it is hard for professional journalists to operate", RSF said in a report.

China continued to be the world's biggest jailer of journalists, with 60 now detained in the country according to the report.
