A Third of Migrant Caravan Participants Have Health Issues Including Lice, Tuberculosis

"San Diego Sector Chief Patrol Agent Rodney Scott said, "It was Border Patrol agents" effort and valued partnership with the Honduran Consulate in Los Angeles that helped us identify a unsafe convicted felon moving amongst the migrant caravan, '" Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Press Secretary Tyler Houlton said in a Friday statement.

"Since no one is listening to us, we've decided as a women's movement.to launch a hunger strike", said Claudia Miranda of Honduras at an improvised press conference in the border city of Tijuana.

Migrants, part of a caravan of thousands from Central America trying to reach the United States, shower in front of the border wall with the United States, whilst they rest in a temporary shelter in Tijuana, Mexico, Nov. 28, 2018. Two other men, ages 22 and 38, were also arrested while attempting to illegally cross the border, and discovered to be Honduran nationals.

Hundreds of people marched toward the San Ysidro crossing where they were stopped by Mexican police.

"I didn't really have much of a plan when I left Honduras: everyone said that we would be able to cross the border - I thought it would be easier", said 29-year-old Yocelyn Alvarado as she picked up her 3-year-old son Fernando to stop him wondering into vast puddle of stinking floodwater and sodden trash. They fanned out on both sides of the crossing and many slipped through an opening in the border fence or tried to climb over.

Tijuana officials declared a humanitarian crisis on November 22, asking for global groups to step in and help the city deal with the caravan. A six-hour period during which US officials were forced to close the border crossing cost his city $129 million pesos.

Immigration officials often deport people who cross illegally instead of prosecuting them first for the federal crime of illegal entry because of "resource constraints, statutory roadblocks and process limitations", Homeland Security spokeswoman Katie Waldman said. They point to images of crying barefoot children running from clouds of tear gas after Sunday's clash as proof of the administration's inhumane treatment. Border patrol officials identified Mara Salvatrucha, a young man who was caught entering the USA illegally, as a member of MS-13.

None of the 42 migrants arrested in Sunday's clash at the US-Mexico border will be criminally charged.

USA authorities are working on a new system to better record evidence if similar circumstances arise in the future, the official said. Asylum seekers are often released in the US pending the outcome of their cases in immigration court.
