Mueller: Manafort Lied During My Investigation, Voiding His Cooperation Agreement

There are so many takeaways from special counsel Robert Mueller's allegation that former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort has lied time and again to FBI investigators, even after Manafort reached a plea agreement that clearly stipulated what cooperation would entail.

But in plea papers, Manafort agreed to cooperate "fully and truthfully" with the investigation conducted by the office of special counsel, including participating in interviews and debriefings, producing any documents in his control, testifying, and agreeing to delay sentencing until a time set by the government.

Through his attorneys, Manafort denied lying, saying he "believes he provided truthful information" during a series of sessions with Mueller's investigators.

The move signals a return to the acrimonious relationship Manafort has had with the special counsel's office since his indictment previous year. It goes on to say that Mueller's team will ask a judge to sentence Manafort for lying to the special counsel.

"After signing the plea agreement, Manafort committed federal crimes by lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Special Counsel's Office on a variety of subject matters, which constitute breaches of the agreement", prosecutors said in a court filing.

Manafort denied the charges, and his attorneys in a joint filing wrote that he "has provided information to the government in an effort to live up to his cooperation obligations".

Manafort said in the same filing he disagreed with Special Counsel Robert Mueller's assertion that he lied to investigators. The cases that Mueller's team brought against Manafort largely focused on his Ukrainian political consulting work, his USA lobbying over the last decade and the financial management of his business proceeds.

It's a dire turn for Manafort, who was accused of witness tampering, pleaded guilty to a range of charges laid by Mueller and finally agreed to cooperate to avert the possibility of spending the rest of his life in prison.

Russian Federation denies United States allegations it hacked Democratic Party emails and ran a disinformation campaign, largely on social media.

The agreement pertains to one of two cases against Manafort.

One of Manafort's closest business contacts for several years has been Konstantin Kilimnik, a Russia-based political operative who prosecutors have alleged has ties to the same Russian military intelligence service that allegedly hacked the Democrats.

He has been held in a Virginia jail since June. It's not clear how Monday's development might affect his situation there.

The torpedoing of Manafort's plea deal could expose him to a lengthier prison sentence and potentially more criminal charges.

The judge in DC District Court who received the update Monday night has not yet weighed in, and a sentencing for Manafort's guilty plea has not yet been scheduled.
