23 dead, dozens missing in Lake Victoria boat tragedy

The boat overturned and sank at about 7 p.m. Saturday night, said senior police officer Zurah Ganyana.

The boat party's music was turned up so loud, Museveni's statement said, the people aboard "might not have heard the emergency commands of the captain".

The MV Templa was in poor condition, had been grounded for some time and lacked a valid license to operate, authorities said.

Rescue efforts were to continue overnight as it is feared others may be trapped under the completely submerged boat.

Kadaga who wrote on behalf of Parliament also expressed the deepest sympathy on the tragedy that befell the people of Uganda when several lives perished in a water accident on Lake Victoria.

Overhead the police deployed a helicopter to help search for more bodies that might have washed up by the shoreline - but they have given up hope that they will find any more survivors.

Saturday's accident occurred off Uganda's Mukono district, near Kampala.

"They were shouting 'Help us!" So far the number of the dead retrieved is 30 in total. One young woman, seeing a victim she apparently recognized, fainted and was rushed to hospital.

Uganda's Director of Police Operations, Asuman Mugenyi said 28 bodies were recovered on Sunday, adding "we can not now tell when this operation will end, it will be determined by number of recoveries we have made". One rescue boat reportedly got overloaded by the survivors who were by now fighting for the few available life jackets.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni offered condolences to the victims, adding that "according to preliminary information from the security services" the boat was "private, unregistered, unlicensed and maybe uninsured".

"Obviously, the operators of this boat will be charged with criminal negligence and manslaughter, if they have not already been punished for their mistake by dying in the accident", Museveni said in a statement.

Yet again East Africa is coming to terms with news of a capsized boat after Tanzania lost close to 250 people in September 2018. Officials said it was dangerously overcrowded.
