One critical after multiple stabbings ‘incident’ in Melbourne

One person was confirmed dead after multiple stabbing incident during rush hour in the Australian city of Melbourne, police said on Friday, as the city was placed on lockdown.

"(Officers) were confronted by a male brandishing a knife and threatening them", Supt Clayton said.

Police shot a man who threatened officers with a knife and he is in a critical condition in hospital, Victoria Police Superintendent David Clayton said.

Further details are unclear however video posted to Twitter and broadcast on television showed a man repeatedly swinging an object at two police officers.

Police said three members of the public were stabbed, one of whom died from their injuries at the scene.

The other two are into the hospital including one suffering from a neck injury and is suspected to be in critical condition. Their genders, ages, and condition are not known. "A third person has also been taken to hospital".

'The exact circumstances are yet to be determined at this stage.

Victoria Police have advised people to stay out of the area while the situation remains on-going.

Witnesses told The Age they were shopping in the area when they saw a man throw what they believed to be a bomb into a vehicle before it exploded.

The buildings surrounding the incident were put into lockdown, and police blocked off sections of Bourke and Swanston streets.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene with an injured pedestrian lying on the ground, and numerous police cars and helicopters flying overhead.

Witnesses said they heard a big bang and images appeared to show a vehicle on fire.

A witness filmed the horrifying scenes as the attacker tried to thrust his knife towards police on Bourke Street.

'Police response was swift and overwhelming.

"Then I heard a loud bang and someone said they could see someone doing chest compressions on someone as an ambulance started coming up the street as well".

"I heard a massive explosion, the auto is completely alight".

"I really wanted to help but I was in shock, I didn't know what to do".

The area is cordoned off and people are asked to avoid the area.
