'Beto 2020' Buzz Builds Immediately After O'Rourke's Senate Defeat

The endorsement was a turn-around from Trump's comments about Cruz during the presidential primary.in which he called him "Lyin' Ted", insulted his wife, and even implicated his father in the Kennedy assassination.

Following a narrow defeat to Senator Ted Cruz in Texas, O'Rourke, the celebrity-backed Democrat and former punk rocker, told his supporters he was "so f-ing proud" of them at the end of his concession speech in El Paso.

Even that was a shock for Cruz, who won 10-plus contests during the 2016 Republican presidential primary and has always been considered the most powerful and popular conservative in a state full of them.

In North Texas, early voting results had O'Rourke with a strong lead in Dallas County with 65.7% compared to Cruz's 33.68%.

Beto O'Rourke may have lost Texas on Tuesday, but he did not go gently into that good night. His statewide campaign galvanized voters in every Texas district, and he may well be credited with pulling a few Democratic representatives to victory. It's the time for action. "They're energised", Cruz said on Monday.

Cruz is projected to win their close Senate race in Texas.

No matter what happens, O'Rourke is now a national Democratic star, using donations from across the nation to smash Senate race fundraising records - including raking in more than $38 million in the three-month period from July through September. Instead of tacking to the center on key issues like gun control, immigration, abortion, and health care, O'Rourke ran on a platform that was more or less indistinguishable from that of Bernie Sanders.
