Lacazette strikes late as Arsenal hold Liverpool

Liverpool go a point clear of Manchester City, who play tomorrow, at the top of the table.

The Frenchman was unable to end his Arsenal career on a high note following comprehensive loss to Manchester City in the League Cup final at Wembley last term before a 2-1 aggregate loss to Spanish side Atletico Madrid in the Europa League semi-finals.

"I think it shows where we're trying to be", he added.

Liverpool tried a 4-3-3 in the first half and a 4-2-3-1 in the second, but in both it struggled to impose itself, hampered perhaps by the absence of either Jordan Henderson or Naby Keita (or both) in midfield.

MF Alex Iwobi, 7 - Gave Arsenal a spark when he came on and did well to set up Lacazette for the equaliser.

Liverpool's intense pressing style and ability to swamp teams through sheer weight of goals under manager Jurgen Klopp would be the litmus test of Emery's new Arsenal.

Arsenal have won more points from losing positions, eight, than any other team in the Premier League this season and while they have not led at half-time in any of their league games, they have scored 19 goals after the break - more than any other side.

It was match commentator Peter Drury that said it, but the whole footballing world surely knows it and is taking notice of the football that Unai Emery has Arsenal playing this season, putting them back on the map at the top of the English game. Roberto Firmino hit the woodwork and Sadio Mane was wrongly flagged offside for the follow-up, while Virgil van Dijk's looped header kissed the post in first-half stoppage time.

"We are nearer to this performance going forward, and it is not a bad point, but we need more". After two or three minutes, we had the next chance to score.

"You have a compact formation, you force [Arsenal] to pass the ball somewhere - that's pressing, it's not that complicated", said Klopp.

"Hendo feels really good but it will be probably the start of the week when he will be back in training".

Much of that improvement is thanks to Lucas Torreira, the muscular Uruguayan midfielder signed from Sampdoria in the summer. It's not nice, but of course a point at Arsenal will always be an absolutely good result.

Further forward, the talented but frustrating Mesut Ozil and Henrikh Mkhitaryan continue to blow hot and cold, but the two flair players at least now put a shift in for the team and play with a sense of objective.
