Jamal Khashoggi was strangled and dismembered, Turkish chief prosecutor says

The official said investigators do not believe Saudi Arabia's official story on what happened to the body.

Turkey has demanded that Saudi authorities tell them where the body is.

"Likewise, the refusal of the Saudi public prosecutor - who recently visited his counterpart in Istanbul - to cooperate with the (Turkish) investigation and answer even simple questions is very frustrating", he wrote.

After initially denying Khashoggi had been murdered, the Saudi government claimed he died in an unplanned "rogue operation".

The killing also strained Saudi Arabia's ties with Washington and other western allies.

Hatice Cengiz made her appeal in a video message to a memorial in Washington where friends and activists marked one month since Khashoggi's death and paid tribute to his advocacy for democratic change in the Arab world.

The New York Times, quoting two people familiar with the matter, reported Friday that White House officials knew from an October 9 phone call with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman that he considered Khashoggi a unsafe Islamist, and therefore knew the Saudi prince had a potential motive for the killing.

Aktay was first government official that Hatice Cengiz, Khashoggi's fiancee, called when he didn't emerge from the consulate.

"They aimed to ensure no sign of the body was left", said Aktay.

Meanwhile, in the latest development in the month-long investigation into the journalist's death, an advisor to the Turkish President said the body was cut up so it would dissolve easier.

A statement issued by the state-run Saudi Press Agency on October 3, insisted Jamal Khashoggi disappeared after leaving the diplomatic post.

"We now see that it wasn't just cut up; (the Saudi suspects) got rid of the body by dissolving it", Yasin Aktay, an adviser to Recep Tayyip Erdogan and an official in Turkey's ruling party, told the newspaper Hurriyet on Friday.

Istanbul's prosecutor confirmed on Wednesday that the writer was strangled.

They report that the USA government is continuing to support the crown prince, and that "Major figures in [American] finance signaled that they, too, meant to look past the killing".

"The whole world has been shocked by this grotesque killing, and it's vital that we don't let the outrage fade away without justice being done", Kate Allen, Amnesty International UK's Director said.

Some western media have claimed Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was complicit in the murder.

The crown prince, who has denied any involvement in Khashoggi's disappearance, reportedly described the journalist as a risky Islamist shortly after he vanished in a phone call with White House adviser Jared Kushner and national security adviser John Bolton.

The Saudi attorney general has since acknowledged that Khashoggi was killed in a premeditated murder.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Thursday it may take "a handful more weeks" before Washington has enough evidence to impose sanctions on the individuals responsible.

Khalid bin Ahmad tweeted that "despite the ongoing dispute, (Netanyahu) has taken a clear position on the importance of stability in the region and Saudi Arabia's role in consolidating that stability".
