Gunmen kill 7 in attack on bus carrying Coptic Christians in Egypt

At least seven people died and 14 others were wounded when gunmen opened fire on two buses driving towards the St. Samuel the Confessor monastery in Minya province south of Cairo, according to the interior minister.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

Sources told Ahram Online the buses were using alternative roads to the monastery after the main road was closed a year ago after a similar attack on pilgrims.

Christian sites of worship across Egypt have been repeatedly targeted, often in attacks claimed by the Islamic State (IS) group, prompting the authorities to impose a state of emergency 18 months ago.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi said he was "deeply saddened" by the attack and vowed to push ahead with Egypt's campaign against "terrorism".

The Coptic Church in a statement released the names of the seven "martyrs" - including two women - who died in the attack.

"They want to embarrass el-Sissi and show that the state is unable to protect the Copts", said Fr. Begemy Naseem Nasr, the priest of the church of Saint Mary in Minya. The previous attack in May 2017 left almost 30 people dead.

Seventy-four people were killed in the attacks in 2016 and 2017 targeting Coptic Christians in Cairo, Alexandria and the Nile Delta city of Tanta.

ISIS killed more than 40 people in twin church bombings in April 2017 and a month later shot dead 28 Christians in Minya province.

Egypt's Christians, who account for some 10 percent of the country's 100 million people, complain of discrimination in the Muslim majority country. It's also in Minya where most acts of violence, like attacks on churches and Christian homes and businesses, take place.
