Federer stuns Daniil to reach Basel decider

The 35th-ranked Serb then broke Federer's serve three times, including back-to-back to clinch the set and level the match.

It is Zverev's 52nd win of the season and a ninth semi-final spot for the world number five, who has already qualified for the season-ending ATP Finals in London next month.

Federer has not been beaten at his home tournament since losing the 2013 final to Juan Martin del Potro and emerged with a 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 victory over Marius Copil.

American Jimmy Connors (109) is the only player to have won more than 100 career titles in the professional era.

Roger Federer has sent fans into a frenzy with his victory speech after winning a ninth title in Basel.

"This was nearly a turnaround week for me", the Swiss legend said.

The Swiss crowd favourite was never able to comfortably take command against an opponent whom he had defeated in their last six meetings. Second-seeded Kevin Anderson of South Africa led Croatian No. 6 Borna Coric 7-6 (2), 1-2 when Coric retired.

Simon responded, however, breaking Federer three times in the second set to force a third.

"I want to congratulate Kei on a great week", Anderson said on court after receiving the trophy.

Earlier, second seed Alexander Zverev hammered a dozen aces to reach the final four with a 7-5, 6-3 defeat of Roberto Bautista Agut.

"It would be great to win my 99th career title here in Basel".

"I was hoping to serve well, get some free points".

The top-seeded Swiss rallied from trailing by a service break in each set against the 93rd-ranked Romanian, whose serve was measured at 243 kph (151 mph) in his opening service game.

There were four consecutive breaks of serve during an erratic second set, but a big forehand victor earned Simon a crucial third break and a 5-4 lead that he did not relinquish. But he finally lost his nerve in the 12th game when two unforced errors in a row handed Federer the match.
