Migrants break through fence at Guatemala border

Some of the migrants, who are recognized to be fleeing violence, political instability, and the poor economic conditions of their native homelands in Central and South America, hope to stay and work in Mexico.

Central American migrants traveling in a caravan broke through a Guatemalan border fence Friday, running into a wall of police in Mexico, whose government has promised the United States it will confront the caravan.

U.S. discussions with the Mexican government have involved both the administration of outgoing president Enrique Peña Nieto and representatives of incoming president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who won election in July and will take office December 1.

"We're going to take care of our relationship with the United States government", he said.

The US president has made it clear to Mexico that he is monitoring its response.

However, by the end of Thursday, the US president was also thanking Mexico for its efforts to contain the caravan. And requests for asylum will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis, a process that can take up to four months.

Honduran migrants heading in a caravan to the United States, walk in direction to the border with Mexico as they leave Guatemala City on October 18, 2018.

On Friday afternoon, hundreds of the migrants poured through Guatemala's frontier posts towards the closed Mexican border on a bridge spanning the Suchiate River that bisects the two countries, Mexican television footage showed.

But foreign minister Videgaray said that was "false" and that no such deal had been made. The nearest border is about 110 miles (177 km) away.

Mexican Foreign Relations Secretary Luis Videgaray said those with passports and valid visas would be let in immediately, though he acknowledged that "we anticipate those are the minority".

The thousands of Hondurans are making their way through Guatemala, headed toward Mexico and, if they're allowed through, plan to head onward to the US, as the contentious midterm elections approach November 6. They also said migrants caught without papers would be deported.

"This is a large group of people that are putting women and children in front of the caravan to use as shields as they make their way through", he said.

But in Mexico, where protesters alreadyhave been marching in support of the approaching Honduran migrants, caving to US pressure wouldn't play almost as well.

Tucker Carlson said Thursday that Democrats like Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) are not joining President Trump's calls to stop the caravan of Central American migrants because the left believes that "unchecked immigration will strengthen their hold on power".

"Because many of those people, a percentage, a fairly big percentage of those people are criminals and they want to come into our country and they're criminals".

Mexico's southern border is notoriously porous and it was unclear how numerous migrants would attempt to cross legally at the bridge. "The United States stands ready to assist the Government of Mexico and UNHCR in this effort".
