Want to be a billionaire? This lottery jackpot is a good start

The new jackpot set another record as the highest Mega Millions prize ever, and got even closer to the highest lottery prize ever, $1.6 billion.

Seven-time lottery game grand prize victor Richard Lustig tips on his advice to win the Mega Million and Powerball jackpots.

Each of the 24 semi-weekly drawings have failed to produce a top victor since July 24, when an 11-member group of employees at a Wells Fargo branch in Santa Clara County, California, won a $US543 million Mega Millions jackpot.

Each $2 Mega Millions ticket nets you a 1 in 302.5 million shot at the fortune, which has been accumulating since the last jackpot win in July.

And if you want to buy Mega Millions tickets in time for a chance to win the almost $1 billion jackpot, take note that tickets are sold in 44 states, plus Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.

A representative from Michigan Lottery said more than 225,000 lottery tickets were purchased before 11 a.m. Thursday and 950,000 tickets were purchased on Wednesday. Sales were still down, compared with 2016, when they surpassed $80 billion, according to the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries. The lottery officials who run Mega Millions tweaked the rules and odds of the game last October to make jackpots pay out less frequently, spurring their monster growth.

Most people take the cash payout.

Young said she had played the lottery before, but "only when it's huge", she said.

The prize is so big that Kurland said he will probably buy a ticket himself. "The way you want to think about it is that there are set amount of numbers in the game, and it's you against probability, not against the other players".

If you go to the Minnesota Lottery headquarters in Roseville tomorrow between noon and 1 p.m., they're giving away one ticket each to the first 250 people that show up.
