Trump's Tangled Relationship With Saudi Arabia

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he spoke with President Donald Trump on October 18 and told him that the United States should give Saudi Arabia more time to finalize their official investigation into the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo want everyone to cool their heels until the Saudis finish their investigation, "and Saudi Arabia is really making headway with their 'investigation, ' because today, one of the 15 alleged Saudi killers died in a auto accident in Riyadh", Colbert said.

'We'll be making a statement, a very strong statement'.

Now Trump said it "certainly looks" as though the reporter is dead.

Pro-government media in Turkey have released surveillance photos identifying an intelligence officer in Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's entourage as the mastermind of the alleged killing.

Khashoggi had lived in the USA in self-imposed exile since 2017 and the Trump administration is under mounting pressure, including from Republican lawmakers, to hold the Saudi government, an ally and major buyer of American defence equipment, to account.

The Saudi government has repeatedly denied murdering Khashoggi.

Investigators have obtained an audio recording of journalist Jamal Khashoggi allegedly being murdered in the Saudi consulate, according to sources close to the investigation. "But we're waiting for the results of about three different investigations, and we should be able to get to the bottom fairly soon", Trump said.

Stephen Colbert has mocked President Donald Trump for his perceived soft-pedaling of suspicions that Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi was murdered in a Saudi Arabian consulate.

Meanwhile, CNN reported Friday that Turkish officials suspected within hours of Khashoggi's disappearance that he had likely been killed. He disappeared after entering the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul on October 2, and Turkish officials have accused the Saudis of brutally killing Khashoggi there.

ABC News also reported that "Turkish officials believe that Khashoggi was killed inside the Saudi consulate following a struggle that lasted eight minutes and they believe he died of strangulation".

In Istanbul, Turkish investigators for a second time searched the Saudi consulate, where Khashoggi vanished, in a hunt for clues.

New reporting overnight could escalate a diplomatic crisis between the USA and Saudi Arabia.

"I've seen no tape". The prince is next in line for the throne held by his aged father King Salman.

"They said, 'We have audio on this".

Pompeo told reporters that he advised Trump that Saudi Arabia should be given a few more days to complete its investigation into the disappearance of Khashoggi, which has caused an worldwide outcry and strained Saudi relations with western countries and corporations.
