Usual suspects among Ballon d’Or nominees

The victor will be announced in Paris on 3 December with a women's victor awarded for the first time.

Ronaldo is the defending champion, having won his fifth Ballon d'Or in 2017.

However, Fifa ended its association with the award in September 2016.

Since Kaka won the award in 2007, the Ballon d'Or has been won by either Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo every year since.

The player with the most points will be awarded the Ballon d'Or, while the player with the most first picks will claim the prize in the event of a tie.

The 25-year-old was part of France's World Cup winning team, scoring a goal in the final against Croatia.

Antoine Griezmann, a World Cup victor with France and Europa League champion at Atletico Madrid, is nominated alongside worldwide teammate and Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante.

England only have one representative on the list in Harry Kane while Gareth Bale is also among the nominees.

Manchester City forward Sergio Aguero, Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson, Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema and Paris St-Germain attacker Edinson Cavani are also contenders.

Liverpool's Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino and Uruguay's rugged defender Diego Godin of Atletico Madrid also got the nod.

PSG's Mbappe appears a dead certainty for the newly-introduced Kopa Trophy, which rewards the best players under 21, and is voted on by previous Ballon d'Or winners.

For the first time, a Ballon d'Or for women players will be awarded this year, with the nominees to be announced later Monday.
