Interpol president reported missing after trip to China

Interpol's president Meng Hongwei has been reported missing after travelling to his native China last week, French police said on Friday.

Meng's wife contacted police in Lyon, the French city where the global police cooperation agency has its headquarters, after not hearing from him since his departure on September 29, police sources said.

French police sources told Reuters their investigation was into what is termed in France a "worrying disappearance".

Beijing saw Meng's election as a chance to enlist more global help in tracking down alleged economic criminals, including corrupt officials, targeted by President Xi Jinping's anti-graft campaign.

Meng was elected president of Interpol in November 2016. Meng's wife reported her husband's disappearance to French authorities because she has been living in France with their children, Europe 1 reported.

The president of global police group, Interpol, has allegedly gone missing after he went to China.

Meng Hongwei, the director of Interpol, is reportedly missing.

At the time, human rights organizations such as Amnesty International expressed concerns that Beijing could use Interpol to arrest dissidents and refugees overseas.

"Interpol's General Secretariat headquarters will not comment further", it said.

He has held a variety of positions within China's security establishment, including as a vice minister of public security - the national police force - since 2004.

He was named president of Interpol in 2016. In particular, Meng likely dealt extensively with former security chief Zhou Yongkang, who is now serving a life sentence for corruption.
