US Senate to receive Federal Bureau of Investigation report on Brett Kavanaugh

US Senate to receive Federal Bureau of Investigation report on Brett Kavanaugh

The Senate is set to review the findings on Thursday.

Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell wants a final Senate vote on Judge Kavanaugh's nomination on Saturday.

Three women came forward last month to accuse Kavanaugh of sexual harassment or assault during his high school and college years.

In this case, McConnell is using it so that the Senate can vote to end debate on Kavanaugh's nomination, the network added - and the Republicans have enough seats to make that happen. That means that if all Democrats vote against confirming Mr Kavanaugh, Republicans can only afford one defection - since in a tie, Vice-President Mike Pence would get the casting vote.

Mr Flake said on USA television: "There's no time and no place for remarks like that, that discuss something this sensitive at a political rally". "The Senate will vote on this nomination this week".

The FBI, which reportedly interviewed several people connected to Ford's claim is expected to release its final report on Thursday.

Senators Jeff Flake and Susan Collins, both key votes to confirm Brett Kavanaugh, spoke out a day after Mr Trump's remarks at a MS rally.

The FBI also talked to two other friends of Kavanaugh's who were listed as attending a gathering during the same summer that Ford alleged she was assaulted: Chris Garrett, who went out with Ford for a time, and Tim Gaudette. I don't know. Where's the house? I don't know! But I had one beer. "I never saw Brett black out or not be able to remember the prior evening's events, nor did I ever see Brett act aggressive, hostile or in a sexually aggressive manner to women", wrote one of them, Dan Murphy, a former suitemate of Kavanaugh. "'I don't remember, '" Trump said at the rally Tuesday in Southaven.

Kavanaugh is a Roman Catholic who has said religion is an important part of his life.

"There's no time and no place for remarks like that", he said on NBC's Today show. "It's kind of appalling".

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, told reporters that Trump's Tuesday night lampooning of Ford at a MS campaign rally was "just plain wrong." Sen.

When asked to explain why the President described her that way only to change his tune, Ms Huckabee Sanders replied: "the President believes that Judge Kavanaugh should be confirmed".

"I would tell him, knock it off".

At a rally Tuesday night in Mississippi, Trump made fun of Christine Blasey Ford's testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

"We all saw something about Judge Kavanaugh's temperament and character that day that should disqualify him from serving on the Supreme Court of the United States", Hirono said.

Raj Shah, deputy White House press secretary, said the report, which Democrats have denounced as hasty and incomplete, marked "the last addition to the most comprehensive review of a Supreme Court nominee in history, which includes extensive hearings, multiple committee interviews, over 1,200 questions for the record and over a half million pages of documents".

Trump limited the investigation to no more than a week.

The Delaware Democrat also didn't sign another letter over the weekend that Senate Judiciary Democrats sent to White House Counsel Don McGahn and FBI Director Christopher Wray listing two dozen witnesses they wanted the FBI to interview during its background probe.

Republican and Democratic senators alike have called for at least a summary of the Federal Bureau of Investigation findings to be made public.

Besides Trump, Senate Republicans also began to aim credibility questions at Ford.

"Sometimes people are accused of something they didn't do", Graham said.

The six days that have elapsed since the hearing have only made the confirmation showdown for President Donald Trump's pick more divisive and deepened the cavern of mistrust between Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill, just five weeks before midterm elections.
