Russian Intel Agency GRU Accused of 'Brazen' Cybercrimes

Data from the laptop showed it was also present in the Swiss city of Lausanne where it was linked to the hacking of a laptop belonging to the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada), which has exposed doping by Russian athletes.

Prosecutors say the Russians also targeted a Pennsylvania-based nuclear energy company and an worldwide organization that was investigating chemical weapons in Syria and the poisoning of a former GRU officer.

The Justice Department in the United States has previously blamed the group for conducting numerous hacking operations there and around the world.

Four Russians arrived in the Netherlands on April 10 and were caught three days later with spying equipment at a hotel located next to the OPCW headquarters, the Dutch military intelligence agency said.

Russian Federation has consistently denied any involvement in the Skripal chemical attack and the shooting down of MH17.

"This pattern of behaviour demonstrates their desire to operate without regard to global law or established norms and to do so with a feeling of impunity and without consequences", Mr. Hunt said.

Dutch Defence Minister Ank Bijleveld made the allegation at a press conference in the Hague, saying Dutch authorities disrupted the attempt by Russian intelligence agents in April.

The four Russians in the Netherlands were detained on April 13 and expelled to Russia, Dutch Major General Onno Eichelsheim said.

Speaking about Russia's hacking attempts into the MH17 crash investigation, she said: "We have been aware of the interest of Russian intelligence services in this investigation and have taken appropriate measures".

"The vivid imagination of our colleagues from the United Kingdom has no boundaries indeed [.] it's undignified for the country, which pretends to play one of the leading roles in the world", she said.

"It is evident from the allegations in today's indictment that the defendants believed that they could use their perceived anonymity to act with impunity", John Demers, the USA assistant attorney general for national security, said at a press conference announcing the charges.

The OPCW is carrying out forensic tests in the investigation into the poisoning of the former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury on March 4.

He said Russia's actions against the Netherlands-based OPCW came as the agency was conducting an independent analysis of the nerve agent used against the Skripals.

But Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova dismissed the new accusations on Thursday, calling them "big fantasies".

Earlier, British Defense Secretary Gavin Williamson branded a series of global cyber attacks blamed on Russian Federation as the reckless actions of a "pariah state", saying that Britain and its North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies would uncover such activities in the future.

"Where Russia acts in an indiscriminate and reckless way, where they have done in terms of these cyberattacks, we will be exposing them", Williamson told reporters in Brussels at talks with U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and their North Atlantic Treaty Organisation counterparts.

The Department of Justice hit hackers with charges Thursday.

The British National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) also identified numerous hacking groups, including APT28, Pawn Storm, Sandworm, Fancy Bear and the Sofacy Group, as being associated with the GRU.

The United States has sanctioned GRU officers including its chief, Igor Korobov, in 2016 and 2018 for attempted interference in the 2016 USA election and cyber attacks.

In a rare moment of complete agreement for the US' two biggest intelligence agencies, both the Federal Bureau of Investigation and CIA come to the conclusion that the Russian Federation government sought to influence the U.S. election by promoting unfavorable coverage of Hillary Clinton. "We are going to actually make it clear that where Russian Federation acts, we are going to be exposing that action", Williamson said.

"This is not the actions of a great power".

"The Government of Canada assesses with high confidence that the GRU was responsible for this compromise", the Canadian statement said. They said Australia wasn't significantly impacted, but the cyberattacks caused economic damage and disrupted civilian infrastructure in other places.
