Ronaldo left out of Portugal's upcoming worldwide matches

Portugal national team Cristiano Ronaldo is embroiled in a controversy as his friend Kathryn Mayorga, a former teacher, accused Ronaldo of raping her in 2009.

The 33-year-old has issued a strong denial over allegations he sexually assaulted a woman in Las Vegas in 2009.

The ongoing scandal is not the reason for his absence, however, with Portuguese newspaper A Bola reporting that he has asked to be left out of the side until 2019.

Ronaldo, who is nearing the end of his playing career, is a national hero in Portugal and the country's best-known celebrity.

The football team is due to play three Nations League games against Poland on 17 October and against Italy and Poland in November and a friendly against Scotland later this month.

"Keen as I may be to clear my name, I refuse to feed the media spectacle created by people seeking to promote themselves at my expense".

Per the AP, Santos said the decision about Ronaldo's availability was made after he consulted with Ronaldo and the head of the Portuguese soccer federation.

Few days back as well, the Juventus player denied raping an American woman in a Instagram live video and called it fake news.

Santos said he expected Ronaldo to play again for Portugal eventually.

The Juventus forward also missed Portugal's first two post-World Cup matches last month, with coach Fernando Santos saying Ronaldo had only just moved to the Italian club and needed time to settle in.

This week the Las Vegas police force announced they would be returning to the case after Mayorga went public with her claims in an interview with the German magazine Der Spiegel.

Mayorga filed the suit September 27 and detailed the assault as well as claims Ronaldo's "team" threatened her with public ridicule and influenced the police investigation.

Photos show Mayorga and Ronaldo partying at a Las Vegas hotel that year.
