Police questioned Kavanaugh after bar fight in 1985

Here's something you might not expect to enter a conversation about Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh: The band UB40.

Brett Kavanaugh, Chris Dudley were in bar fight after 1985 UB40 concert -The ex Blazer and GOP candidate in the 2010 OR governor's race was in a brawl with friend Kavanaugh, the New York Times reports. The glass hit the man in the right ear, causing him to bleed.

Swalwell said Kavanaugh lying about this could disqualify him from serving on the Supreme Court because "he has painted himself as a choir boy who never engaged in any of this behavior, and all of the evidence seems to go the other way".

The report said 21-year-old Dom Cozzolino told police that Mr Kavanaugh threw ice at him for "some unknown reason".

Kavanaugh and four other men were questioned by the New Haven, Connecticut, police department as a result of the incident in September 1985, the Times reports.

"She is not a news reporter", said Times' spokeswoman Eileen Murphy. James Roche said Kavanaugh was a "notably heavy drinker, even by the standards of the time, and that he became aggressive and belligerent when he was very drunk".

The report did not indicate whether any charges were filed and whether there were any arrests, according to The Times.

The White House did not have any immediate reaction on behalf of itself or Kavanaugh, but directed CNN to comments made by Chris Dudley, a close friend of Kavanaugh's and a former National Basketball Association player.

The incident was recounted by Chad Ludington, another classmate of Kavanaugh's who has been in contact with the Federal Bureau of Investigation amid a supplemental background check on Kavanaugh following allegations of sexual misconduct by several women.

Ludington said in the statement he often drank with Kavanaugh when they were classmates, and said Kavanaugh had played down "the degree and frequency" of his drinking in his testimony. In Ludington's statement released Sunday he also mentions an altercation involving Kavanaugh: "On one of the last occasions I purposely socialized with Brett, I witnessed him respond to a semi-hostile remark, not by defusing the situation, but by throwing his beer in the man's face".

There was some shouting, and then the police showed up, Ludington said.

Late Monday night, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders re-tweeted Bazelon's tweet on Kavanaugh, commenting, "Democrats desperately attack Judge Kavanaugh for throwing ice during college". Sanders questioned. "Throwing ice 33 years ago, or her opinion of Judge Kavanaugh in July?"

Ludington is a professor at North Carolina State University, The New York Times reports, and he has appeared to have made small political contributions to Democratic candidates.

Dudley denied the accusations against him, while 53-year-old Kavanaugh did not explicitly refute the claims.
