Fan Bingbing: missing Chinese actress emerges with £100m tax bill

Fan must pay about $128.7 million in back taxes and fines after an investigation found the actress and her company avoided paying millions in taxes, according to state news agency Xinhua and state-owned broadcaster CGTN.

The 37-year-old actress, who has more than 60 million followers on the Twitter-like Weibo, has vanished from public view amid a scandal about movie stars under-reporting their earnings. As long as she pays back that amount, plus almost 600 million yuan in fines, she will avoid criminal prosecution. Fan and her companies were ordered to pay fines and fees totaling to almost RMB884 million (USD129 million) by an undisclosed deadline.

The Jiangsu provincial tax bureau delivered its judgments to Fan on Sunday, Xinhua said. She also has a role in the upcoming Bruce Willis-Adrien Brody feature Air Strike.

Fan Bingbing, who appeared in "X-Men: Days of Future Past" and is one of China's highest-profile celebrities, was ordered to pay a $130 million tax fine as she reemerged months after dropping off all social media platforms, sparking concern among her fans.

If Fan doesn't pay the fines within the prescribed time limit, she could face criminal charges.

"I sincerely apologize to everyone", she said in a statement she reportedly posted to an official social media account.

"For the past period of time, I have experienced pain and torture like never before".

The Middle Kingdom's highest-paid actress disappeared without a trace, and speculation had been building for weeks that it might be linked to a tax-evasion case.

Speaking ominously of "enormous fears and worries" she faces over the mistakes she made in the past, she laments that, "I failed my country which nurtured me; I failed the country which trusted me; I failed the fans who loved me".

It was previously reported Fan had been banned from leaving China, amid the investigation.

"I will do my best to overcome any difficulties in collecting funds to pay back due tax and fines determined by the tax authorities eventually", she said. "Without the Party and the state's great policies, without the love of the people, there would be no Fan Bingbing", she wrote.

When Fan dropped out of sight, the Chinese government had just put in place salary caps for TV actors.

Fan Bingbing attends the Givenchy show as part of the Paris Fashion Week Womenswear Spring/Summer 2018 on October 1, 2017 in Paris, France.
