Amazon Raises Minimum Hourly Pay to $15, Calls For New Minimum Wage

That could be good news for numerous Internet giant's workers across North Carolina.

The company said the wage will benefit more than 250,000 of the company's employees, and another 100,000 seasonal employees.

Amazon is raising its minimum wage to $15 an hour for all USA employees.

Bezos is the world's richest man by a large margin-he is worth around $165 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index-but previous year Amazon's median pay was just $28,446, which works out to around $14 an hour.

The federal minimum wage for the U.S.is now $7.25, though most states offer higher wages.

Jay Carney, Amazon's senior vice president for global corporate affairs, pledged that the company would advocate a minimum wage increase "that will have a profound impact on the lives of tens of millions of people and families across this country". Last month it became the second publicly traded company to be worth $1 trillion, hot on the heels of Apple. Walmart announced back in January that it plans to raise its minimum wage to $11 per hour.

All hourly US employees in operations and customer service jobs, including those who made more than $15 an hour, would receive a pay bump in November, a spokeswoman said. Washington state has the highest minimum wage in the country at $11.50 per hour, and Seattle, like New York City, has implemented a $15 minimum.

The company's announcement comes just ahead of the holiday hiring season.

"We will be working to gain congressional support for an increase in the federal minimum wage".

Amazon shares, trading lower before the company announced the wage hike, were down less than 0.3 percent at $1,997.75 in trading before the bell.

Workers have been protesting against fast food chains like McDonald's Corp and demanding wage increases since 2012 but conditions at Amazon's warehouses, distribution centers and for its couriers have been drawing media attention and criticism for some time.

Amazon will also be raising their own minimum wage in the United Kingdom to £9.50 ($12.30), and in the London area to £10.50 ($13.60). The increases will include 17,000 Amazon employees as well as 20,000 seasonal workers.
