Jeff Flake: I Will Vote to Confirm Brett Kavanaugh

Mazie Hirono (Hawaii), Kamala Harris (Calif.), Richard Blumenthal (Conn.), Sheldon Whitehouse (R.I.) and Patrick Leahy (Vt.) ― walked out of the committee after members moved to vote on Kavanaugh's nomination Friday afternoon. "I will vote to confirm Judge Kavanaugh".

The vote comes one day after hours of emotionally charged testimony from Kavaunaugh and the woman who accused him of sexually assaulting her while they were teenagers.

Still, even many Republicans who believed Ford was honestly recounting what happened to her took the view that it was a case of mistaken identity, believing Kavanaugh's emotional testimony that was not there and did not attack her.

His yes vote means Kavanaugh will likely be confirmed by the Judiciary Committee Friday. She said she found Kavanaugh more convincing than she expected, but said confirming him would be a "huge mistake" because "no one will trust the Supreme Court". Flake had previously voiced concern over Kavanaugh.

Two key undecided Republican votes remain: Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski, and Maine Senator Susan Collins.

Democrats had demanded that before any committee action senators should hear from a man Ms. Blasey Ford says was in the room for the assault.

Trump has also criticized Republican leaders in Congress for not speeding the process along, leading to days' worth of revelations against Kavanaugh. "His testimony was powerful, honest and riveting", he tweeted. "The Senate must vote!"

While some Republicans and Trump have called the allegations by Ford and the two other women part of a smear campaign, Ford told the committee she had no political motivation, adding: "I am an independent person and I am no one's pawn".

Should Kavanaugh receive the necessary support to move forward as the nominee, the full Senate will assemble on Tuesday, Oct. 2, at which point a vote will be held to determine whether Kavanaugh will be the United States' newest Supreme Court Justice.

Spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters Friday that Kavanaugh has already "been through six separate background investigations by the FBI". In his opening statement Thursday, Kavanaugh twice referenced his years as a student at the Jesuit-run Georgeown Prep school in Maryland.

Kavanaugh's nomination will face a test in the Senate, which has a tight 51-49 Republican majority.

"For the good of the country and the future credibility of the Supreme Court in a world that is finally learning to take reports of harassment, assault and abuse seriously, it is time to find a nominee whose confirmation will not repudiate that lesson", it concluded. Georgetown Prep, Kavanaugh's high school, is a Jesuit institution.
