SpaceX BFR Lunar mission announcement (FULL)

Musk had previously hinted on Twitter that the passenger would be a resident of Japan.

He further said that he's going to invite about six to eight artists from all over the world join his mission to the Moon. He drew attention past year with the purchase of a Jean-Michel Basquiat painting for $110.5 million.

He said he was inspired to bring a group of renowned artists with him around the moon after thinking of the art Basquiat might have created had he flown through space.

Maezawa didn't immediately say who will be on his guest list for the spaceflight, but in response to a question from a reporter he said he'd consider inviting Musk.

Nevertheless, Musk said the Japanese billionaire actually chose his company for the Lunar mission, and not the other way around.

The new strategy is to still fly around the moon, but using an even bigger SpaceX rocket still in development that has its own dedicated passenger ship.

The mission will not involve a lunar landing.

"Lasting about a week, the journey will come as close as 125 miles to the Moon's surface before completing lunar transit and returning back to Earth", SpaceX said.

Astronauts last visited the moon during Nasa's Apollo programme.

While much attention has been focused on Mars, space industry experts say the moon could serve as a first step to future missions.

Of course, the trip will be all expenses paid for the artists.

Nor is it known when the flight will take place as BFR has yet to be built.

It is not clear how much he has paid for the trip.

But so far this year, his space firm has also kept up a schedule outpaced only by the Chinese government, making 15 launches with its Falcon 9 rocket. Nevertheless, SpaceX is pressing on, and apparently feels confident enough in its work that it is comfortable parading its first paying private space "tourist" in front of the world. The trip was organized by the Virginia-based company Space Adventures, which has since sent several more paying customers on spaceflights.

Musk's ultimate goal is to colonize Mars.

We wish Yusaku Maezawa all the best and hope for his safe return back to the Earth.

Musk, who is also the CEO of Tesla Motors, has drawn attention in recent months over his erratic behavior.

Before Monday's announcement, Musk last publicly described the BFR and showed renderings of the system at the 2017 International Aeronautical Congress.

Earlier in the day, Musk was sued for defamation by the British driver he had accused of being a "child rapist" and pedophile via tweets and emails to media.

Although the design for the exterior has been altered since then, Musk said on Monday that SpaceX still only has "some concepts" for the interior of the ship. The device wasn't used and in the interview, Unsworth called it a "PR stunt" and said it wouldn't have worked to free the boys who were trapped in the flooded cave.
