Misleading Florence headlines suggest ‘MYRTLE BEACH COULD GET CUT OFF’

Also, a 77-year-old man was apparently knocked down by the wind and died after going out to check on his hunting dogs, Lenoir County authorities said, and the governor's office said a man was electrocuted while trying to connect extension cords in the rain.

Tropical Storm Florence continued its slow march Saturday afternoon, moving at just 3 miles per hour as it continues bringing heavy bands of rain that state officials said will continue flooding rivers and roads.

Firefighters try to gain access to 3 people in a home that a large tree fell on after Hurricane Florence hit the area on September 14, 2018 in Wilmington, North Carolina.

"A mother and infant were killed when a tree fell on their house", police tweeted Friday afternoon. The woman's husband was injured in the incident and taken to a nearby hospital, according to police. Another person died from a cardiac arrest when emergency services could not reach her, due to downed trees blocking their path.

Hurricane Florence delivered a slow-motion assault to the coast of North Carolina early Friday, with catastrophic storm surge and torrential rains that will continue for days.

The storm battered the coastline throughout Friday and Saturday with hurricane-force winds and as much as 2ft (60cm) of rain in some areas of North Carolina.

- Risky conditions from Hurricane Florence have already claimed three lives, including a mother and her newborn child.

"[It's] very eerie, the wind howling, the rain blowing sideways, debris flying", Orsa, who lives nearby and fears splintering trees will pummel her house, told The Associated Press.

"Heavy rains and catastrophic flooding continue across portions of North Carolina and SC".

The total extent of devastation from Florence, which has turned from a hurricane into a tropical storm, remains unknown as rain and flooding continue to wreak havoc in the Carolinas. She was eventually rescued by a boat crew; 140 more awaited help.

At 5 p.m., Florence was centered about 50 miles (75 kilometers) west-southwest of Wilmington, North Carolina, and about 25 miles (45 kilometers) northeast of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

"This is a hurricane event followed by a flood event", said South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster. "You're going to have flooding miles and miles inland", the center's director, Ken Graham, said.

Some towns have received more than two feet of rain from Florence, and forecasters warned that drenching rains totalling up to three-and-a-half feet of water could trigger epic flooding well inland through early next week.

At least five people have died in storm conditions in North Carolina, according to authorities.

A severe inland flood threat is emerging as remnants of Florence pound the Carolinas with almost nonstop rain for a second day since the once major hurricane howled ashore.

New Bern resident Dan Eudy said he and his brother were awakened on Thursday night by the sound of a boat ramming against his front porch.

For people living inland in the Carolinas, maximum peril could come days later as all that water drains, overflowing rivers and causing flash floods.

New Bern's mayor said 4,200 homes were damaged in the city.

"New Bern is just not used to this level of a hurricane", Outlaw said.

Kevin Knox and his family were rescued from their flooded brick home with the help of Army Sgt. Johan Mackie, part of a team that was using a phone app to locate people in distress. But there were times she thought they wouldn't survive, she told CNN.

In New Bern, a city that backs on to the Neuse river in North Carolina, rescue operations continued on Saturday as significant flooding destroyed homes and some of the city's historic colonial-era statues.

"I honestly cried", Kittrell said.
