An average of 57 people are killed on a daily basis.

A total of 20 336 people were murdered in South Africa during this period.

"We are concerned with the one of the biggest increases in murder since the advent of democracy in 1994", Gareth Newman, director for crime and justice programme at the Pretoria-based Institute of Security Studies (ISS) told AFP.

In Nquthu, there were 26 murders, up by seven, and 152 burglaries - also up.

Nyanga, in the Western Cape, remained the murder capital of the country, with an increase in murders of 9.6%.

As part of its presentation, the SAPS revealed the 30 worst precincts for murder, with the Western Cape having the most stations recorded - however, Gauteng was not far behind.

The rise in murder rate was partly down to gang violence and lethal turf wars over the control of lucrative taxi mini-bus routes that transport many poorer South Africans to work.

In the a year ago, 291 more women were killed than in 2017 - 117 more boys and 29 more girls.

Umlazi in the south recorded the second highest number of reported rape cases in the country - at 252.

It was no surprise that cash-in-transit (CIT) heists incidents increased by 56.6 per cent (238 incidents compared to 152 during 2016/2017) along with bank robberies and truck jacking.

According to the stats, rape incidents had decreased by 0.5 per cent (40 035 incidents had been reported), while sexual assault cases had increased by 8.2 per cent (6 786 incidents reported). The statistics show a 331 drop in incidents, with 2 698 cases reported this past financial year.
