Or as giddy as Bowles gets. Things are not supposed to go this well for the Jets.

Sam Darnold started his National Football League career in the same inauspicious way Brett Favre and Jameis Winston did.

It actually began with a flourish for Detroit when Quandre Diggs intercepted rookie Sam Darnold on the first play from scrimmage and went 37 yards for a touchdown. "It seemed like we were in his head as a defense".

But what happened from there was distinctly non-Jets-like. It was the Jets' first defensive touchdown since 2013. They scored touchdowns on an interception return and a punt return in a 31-point third quarter.

"Probably in the end you really don't know until after the game, unfortunately", Patricia said recently.

Expect the Jets to make good use of their backfield to take some pressure off of Darnold.

Stafford was out of rhythm nearly the entire game, as he completed only 27 of 46 passes for 286 yards.

But the Jets answered in resounding fashion. Giants fans even got in the fun, sharing their delight at their team taking running back Saquon Barkley instead one pick earlier. It was the first of two interceptions by Lee.

In the game, they scored three touchdowns of over 40 yards, and Roberts' 78-yard punt return was the pick of the bunch. Jameis Winston had his first pass intercepted and returned for a touchdown in 2015.

As for running back, Isaiah Crowell's bruising running style is a compliment to Bilal Powell's elusive rushing and pass-catching abilities.

Time lapse: The Jets scored 31 points in 12:20. When no one was open, he held onto the ball, then felt pressure from Ricky Jean Francois. The pick-six gave the Lions a 7-0 lead and had Ford Field rocking. It produced 39 yards on 15 attempts. A sack from Ezekiel Ansah on third down ended the drive. The Jets then took control. If they establish the run vs. Detroit, which is a very real possibility, they will lighten Darnold's burden, keep the ball out of Matthew Stafford's hands and keep the score low - which is exactly how they can win.

The Jets dominated in all phases. Their only first down came from a Jets penalty. Trumaine Johnson, Morris Claiborne and Jamal Adams also picked off passes in a strong start for the Jets self-proclaimed "New Jack City" secondary.

As much as Darnold struggled with turnovers at USC, he had the moxie to overcome them and spark comebacks in a lot of games. Matt Patricia's Lions had a two-deep coverage on the play, which should have prevented against any deep throws.

"I knew at a very young age the strategic part of the game was something that I just loved", Patricia said when he was hired in February.
